Pets at home...youve let me down

Okay so we all know generic pet shop brands are usually naff but pets at home have some alright stuff... :P

So last time I bought the gourmet parrot food for syd and jaz as I'm trying to find one they'll eat most of so I waste less everymonth and also with less nutts as I want to use them for training soon. It was full of lentils and chillis as well as other stuff so looked ok... But my birds wont take dried lentils *sigh*

So I picked up the normal one today and it wasnt until I opened it up at home i saw the full scale of over peanut-ness!!

We pulled out all the shelled ones in a 5kg bag...

Plus it's full of loose ones anyway!

Pffft never again. This is just meant to be like 1/3 of food and the rest is meant to be fresh... But it's still a let down.

Hi Layla,
in German bird forums all users are recommended not to buy peanuts with shell, because they are a dangerous source of mold that causes aspergillosis. By cracking the peanuts they inhale the stuff and get infected.
As a reward I would buy nuts in human food quality.
I buy our seeds at an organic online bird food shop.
If that is too expensive when you have many birds, VerselaLaga would be an option.
You know they cooperate with the loro park at teneriffe.
I've never been disappointed with the quality.
I bought it at http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/birds/bird_food/parrot The prices are fair.

That's true, but only with raw peanuts. The roasted ones are fine, just make sure they are salt free. The bigger birds really enjoy breaking the shells, it's kind of like a foraging treat. My linnies don't even eat the bigger sunflower seeds, so I haven't tried peanuts....which are as big as their heads

To be honest I'm happier they don't have peanuts but I didn't spot how many where in this mix as I was rushing.

So far they've had:
Hagen tropical large parrot
Johnston n jeff low fat african grey
Tidy mix
Pets at home gourmet

All with a high waste amount

So the search is still on for a mix to go alongside the fresh food.

This is a very good mix from Scarletts http://scarlettsparrotessentials.co....ot_seed_12.5kg .. most of everything in this mix is eaten by all my fids, it's quite a basic mix and no peanuts,, I usually top up with what ever seed/nuts/dried fruits that I feel is healthy for the fids and add to this mix.
