fox tail

I don't know if you guys have fox tail in your area but here it grows rampant. It looks like a small head of millet. I was wondering if any of you fed that to your birds. If it is safe? Please let me know. I could have a free millet substitute fairly easily.

I know that they are classified as weeds here and don't know about their nutritional value, if any.

I decided to look online about foxtails, where I found this article.

http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art29569.asp

This is about dogs and the dangers of foxtail seeds for dogs. I copied it because when I was a kid our dog actually did get an infection on his feet, and weed seeds caused it. We don't live west of the Mississippi, so perhaps this was a different type of weed.

The article does speak of the seeds being poisonous, but does speak of dangers if they are inhaled whole.

I'll keep looking, but I do have a question for you. Do you ever see wild birds eating the foxtails you are asking about? If you commonly see wild birds feasting on the seeds, they are probably safe. If not, there is a reason why they leave them alone.

I do believe there are many types of plants called "foxtails".

Thanks Shivani for the awesome siggy!

Yes, there are two very different ones that look very much alike. One is sticky that catches on clothes and is hard to pick off. The other is very soft. So i check first. I have a link on a budgie site that shows someone feeding it to thier budgies. And another that talks about it being safe to feed. I don't know how to post a link but I could maybe forward an e mail to someone if they want to PM me an address. I did go outside and gathered some then found out later that DH had sprayed there so i tossed it before feeding it. I will keep looking.
