Playing With Toys

My cockatiel and my Sun Conure really never play with their toys. I've read that it is good to encourage the birds to be able to play by themselves and not have to rely on me for entertainment 24/7. How should I encourage them to play with their toys more?

Play with them with the toys. It would be my guess that your conure will take to playing with toys readily. It is very young and it is a conure. Generally conures love to play with toys, and they love to make toys out of anything they can get their little beaks on. The cockatiel may become more playful when she sees the conure playing with toys.

Thanks Shivani for the awesome siggy!

Thanks, I'm hoping that when I start leaving the Conure alone more often once I go back to school, he'll discover more of the toys and start playing with them more often.

Abby,
I really encourage you to play with toys with him now, too. You want him to play with toys even while you are home, and he is more likely to do it while you are gone if you have taught him to do so while you are with him. I would consider teaching him to play with toys to be one of the most important things you can do while he is new to your home.

Thanks Shivani for the awesome siggy!

My Libby is crazy about her toys! I "rotate" them every few weeks with ones in her toybox and she gets all excited, just like they are "new"!

Like Nanay says, play with the toys with her and she should get the idea. Anything they think YOU want, THEY want! Libby will play with me and is also very happy playing with her toys on her own, which is great during those times I'm busy with (ugh) housework or other chores.

Great idea, thanks, Nanay! I'm already starting. He/she seems curious about what I'm doing with his toys. I've seen him play with one particular toy before, probably because it's right next to his favorite perch, but very rarely and not with any of the others. Oh! Look! He's now really interested in a toy I was trying to get him to play with just a few minutes ago. Yay. But yeah, I'm definitely going to keep showing her toys. I'll also rotate the ones in her cage often to keep it interesting and different.

Yeah, I mean, do they bother with them? My budgies only seem to like the swings

Yes they probably like the toys the most. My budgies don't swing a lot, though. Only on the play gym, if ever.
