going out of town tips

So for Christmas one of my gifts from the husband is a trip to New Orleans! I have always wanted to go!
We will leave on a sunday and come back on a wed. My parents have already agreed to watch our crittes (our dog, the budgie and Rio our Quaker)
The dog and budgie have been there before and should be fine. Rio though will be his first time since we got him a month ago where we will be gone for more than a few hours. My dad is retired and will be home all day. So he won't be without company. he's met them once and pretty easy going. He really liked my mom hehehe
Anyway was curious about any tips for our trip. I hear Quakers especially get mad when you leave on vacation! he'll have his cage there but it will be at their house. He might be cool and just be mad at me when we get back but i am overprotective bird mommy!

We have a longer trip planned in march for spring break. (taking the kids to Disneyworld!) and if this mini stay goes well, the fur and feather kids will go to grandmas again too.

Our other option was boarding. The vet near us boards exotics, although i don't know the pricing. I just figured Rio would be better at my folks. They can give him 100% attention and hopefully won't stress him out too much.

I don't like boarding them in commercial places so I think your decision of leaving him with your parents is much better. He might be a bit thrown off kilter because one month is not enough for him to feel secure and that he belongs so he is going to be confused and upset but as long as he doesn't start plucking, it should be OK.

They do get a bit annoyed because they feel abandoned but they'll soon warm back up to you

I wouldn't worry I just about it. He'll be fine. I just went in a trip and had a pet sitter. I was worried and people always say plets get mad at you when you leave them. Mine wasn't at all. He was in a super good mood and very happy to see me.

That's good to hear!
Rio is already pretty attached to me and gets mad when we leave for a few hours!
He has a lot of personality but is pretty good about going to anyone. He's not a very fearful bird so I think he'll have fun being spoiled by the grandparents!

Well things went great! Rio really liked my mom but decided she wasn't to wear glasses around her highness! LOL!

Rio was super excited to see me and didn't tell me off when I picked her up today. Of course I looked like Ace Ventura in my car!

We had brought Rio's huge cage to my mom's, the budgies were in the smaller cage, and then I had my German Shepherd too. Rio had to ride on my shoulder!

Today I ordered a small parrot travel cage for next time!

Everything went well. the budgies were content with each other and loved watching Spongebob. My dog loves my folks and is always comfortable there. Rio was the one I was most concerned about. We have had her just over a month and she is very attached to me. If i leave the house for a few hours she gets mad lol! But she did great. I gave her a good 30 minute head preening/scritching session! She has either been with me or her play gyms today and happy as can be!

It went well so I am not worried about Spring Break when we will be gone 7 days instead of 5.

Thanks again for the tips guys!
