Hormonal behaviour?

Hello all~

I have a green cheek conure, Stella, who is 1 year and 9 months old. (are there smilies for conures?! Can't find it!) Every once in a while when she's really comfortable on my shoulder, tangled in my hair (which she loves), she'll make little growling/squeak noises, raise her tail slightly and get fluffy. I'm pretty sure this is hormonal behaviour.

Any suggestions on how to discourage it? I'm thinking she might be stimulated by the hair on her back? Maybe? I've heard of reducing her light hours to eight hours a day only. Anything else to suggest? I preen her head, but I don't pet her back/rump - I read that's sexually stimulating for a parrot.

Thanks!

The trick with light is not only making their nights longer but exposing them to dawn and dusk from beginning to end and allowing them to go to sleep naturally. The other thing with GCCs is that, in nature, they are mainly fruit eaters so they actually require a small portion of protein food (seeds, nuts, pellets) and lots of fruit a day and most people end up having trouble with them because they free-feed the protein food (which should also be reduced during the resting -winter- season).

When birds find a favorite toys (Ie your hair) only thing you can do is take it away from them. So maybe put your hair up so she can play in it would stop that.
Good luck
