I was thinking of opening the cage door today and seeing if skittles (son conure) would like to come out..My question is do they fly (wings clipped) or since they normally climb they just kinda hang out?

Second...once (if he does) come out how do i get him back in..I sure would like to keep my fingers..lol

Thanks for any advice..I think i will wait on a response before opening the cage door..

It depends to which extend the wings are clipped whether he can fly or not.
To get him back to the cage you can work with a stick like Karen suggested.
Until he has leaned that you can use the fact that birds search their sleeping place at dawn. Just keep the electric light off.
That worked well with my untame linnies from the beginning on.

If he won't go back in on his own after a while, do try and encourage him to step up onto a perch, as said above. Is he not hand tame at all? Once he's a little more settled you should try and work on target training with him so you don't have to force him to do anything and you won't end up getting bitten!

A clipped bird, if clipped correctly, should still be able to fly just a little. I recommend letting them grow out if you can though. It's good for them for so many reasons!

No i dont think he was out of his cage when i got him..They said he was close to 2 years old..He will let me hand feed him and touch his beak but when i try and touch his body he wants no part of it..

He didn't want to step up on a perch..He always starts climbing..Now i tell you that bird is a climber and fast too..so any other suggestions would be great..I have only had him maybe going on 3 weeks..
so maybe he just needs alittle more time..

He might act differently outside the cage. My linnies will not step up when they are inside the cage, but will when they are outside. I just open the door, they fly out and then when it's time to go back in, I pick them up (with a perch, because they are more comfortable on it). The first couple of times, they would fly right off the perch, but I just walked over and made them get back on the perch...several times....they got the idea :).

We have a ladder hanging off the bottom of the cage so ours can climb back in. He figured it out quickly.
I also moved the cage close to the couch and opened the door so it touches the arm rest. He likes to hang out with me then will run across the couch and back into the cage to eat or drink or when he is done with me.

If they are in the same room as their cage, I have never had a problem with them getting back in as long as they could fly or climb to it.

One of my cockatiels will happily step up on a perch to go BACK IN his cage but God forbid you try to take him out of his cage. He does that on his own, ONLY. He lived in a pet store for over 2 years and I finally couldn't stand it anymore and brought him home. He is coming along slowly and he has his way of doing things. Start working with your bird as soon as possible. The longer they stay in the "protective" confines of their cage, the harder it will be to socialize him. He may just surprise you! When they are panicked and away from their cage, they'll usually except a ride back to safty from anyone!
