When I was a child my mom had a pair of zebra finches. She took a couple of babies out of the nest and hand fed them off toothpicks. They ended up tame and when the cage door was opened they would fly to your shoulder to visit.

My mom took them to my aunt's school to show the kids and they were so excited to see such little birds flying around and getting on my mom.

-jumps into the conversation because I feel so wanted- WHOOSH! Hey... haha

Marvin was an outcast really, she didn't get along with the other baby finches at all (she was 1 of 5!) and they used to push her away. She couldn't get to the food often because the others wouldn't allow it. Every time I went in the aviary I got her millet and stuff and sat and fed her. She loved it! She couldn't fly very well. All of her siblings were great fliers and went everywhere super fast. She just kind of fell about. She would fly to me in the aviary and hop onto me and I'd carry her about whilst cleaning and feeding. After some time she fell really sick and I worried so much about the poor little thing. I kept her in the house in a small cage with a heat lamp over here and had her sat on my lap while I fed her small bits of egg food mixed with her foreign finch mix. She just got really friendly and loved getting scritches. Once she got her strength up she wanted less and less to do with me. She took a liking to my guy, Jack and was all over him all of the time (I'm jealous!) and not so much me. Soon after that she used to hear her parents tweeting away in the garden and she'd call all of the time. I felt so bad about it! It really did break my heart to see her so sad. She had nobody else. She is currently in a cage in my bird room with Aya, a pure white zebra finch female who is her sister. I will be breeding off her in 2012. My friend is having my old aviary as I'm putting up a new one and I felt it was only right that Marvin had something nice and big to fly in, and a male companion. My friend said she would take her, and my breeding pair of diamond doves and trio of Chinese painted quail too. I don't mind as much though because I will be able to visit any time I want to. She lives not too far for me at all (quick bus trip) and I see her every single day at college I'd rather her be happy and out doing what she wants rather than stuck with nobody. I absolutely loved having her around but sadly she simply grew out of it when she matured and got stronger. I would love to actually hand feed baby finches from the word go. They are hard to tame but it is worth it. I see many videos on youtube of tame finches in Eastern Asian countries. I'd love them to tell me how they do it!

You are a sweetheart, Daisy! Marvin is so lucky to have such a caring and patient owner like you.
