Update on Rocky

Keep forgetting to update these threads on my Fids lol.

So anyway onto Rocky.

His behaviour towards men is not improving very quickly but then again I can't find many men to come round and spend time with him frequently.

He is still 50/50 with my mom when out of the cage and sometimes will step up for her others he will bite. So we have a safety perch for him now,he steps up fine onto this for me, no one is brave enough yet to try it with him, and I refuse anyone handling him if they are feeling nervous of him as it sets him off lol.

When he was out with me the other day we did a huge cage changearound so all his toys were on the table, and I was sorting out his food dishes and he would normally join me on the table and 'help' by putting his food in different dishes and pinching some of it, well he had no where to land on the table and I didn't think of it, I had my side to him and as I turned my head to talk to my mom (at this point my back is to him) he decided he wanted to come over and see what I was doing, which ended up with him trying to land on my head, suddenly panicing and turning around and back to his cage

So I cleared some space for him on the table and he came right down to mooch about.
He had been out for 3 hours when my dad got back in, and the moment he saw my dad he went back in his cage sat on his highest perch and stared at him, at which point my dad got told off by my mom for upsetting Rocky

As soon as my dad left the room Rocky came back out again and came over to me lol.

I also managed to get him to fly straight across the whole width of the room to me! First time he's done it

Bought him some more fruit yesterday and he was so excited when he saw me walk in with a carrier bag, he knows what goodies they hold! Apparently he had sat quiet all day until I was due in from work and then he went mad, he certainly knows the sound of my keys in the door as as soon as I am through that door he's calling out to me but never does it if it is someone else.

Also got some new toys for him which arrived today, just got to do his clean out and put them in for him

I'm amazed at how much he has changed over the 7ish months I've had him, when we first got him he hated being out his cage, would take food from you as quickly as possible and sit in one place not moving, so much so that my parents thought he would never play with his toys.

Now he's flying to me across the room, gets excited when he knows I should be back home, loves being out his cage, eats his veg and fruit with no bothers and doesn't stop playing with his toys lol!

they have a fearful Amazon in the pet shop.
The owner will only sell to an experienced parrot owner.
George has been kept in a cage that is too small with only one toy and 2 perches.
The pet shop have gradually got him 2 new toys in a another perch but he will not go into a new cage.
This is all explained on a sign hanging on his cage.
I wish there was someway I could put his future owner in touch with you as you've done such a fantastic Job with Rocky.

Poor boy
Someday I really want to be able to open up a sanctuary for birds to take in all the unwanted, abused and misunderstood birds.

I'm sure with the right owner who unerstands him he'd come round but a lot of people just won't give him that chance.

Theres always going to be that point with a fearful bird where you just need to give a leap of faith and trust them, once they see you trust you they soon start to trust back. Such amazing creatures.

Hopefully the right person will come along for him soon, so wish I could take another one but still living at home with my parents it's just not possible.

Our mealy parrot Frank was like that as well. He would mainly just sit on top of the cage all day, but he would gently take food from your hands.

Another funny day with him yesterday, got him out as normal and was cleaning his cage ready for his new toys! Got a new forager for him (that square shaped one with the four boxes posted in another thread on here), a new preener toy, another perch and some foot toys. but anyway.

He went for my dad again twice lol, first time was hilarious (I know I shouldn't laugh but it's his own fault) my dad was walking past him and Rocky went for him but actually kept leaning around to get him whilst opening and closing his beak stretching as far as he could! He didn't get him, then when my dad turned round as me and my mom were sniggering Rocky straightened up and just looked at him giving his best innocent impression. Second time my dad went past again and again Rocky leaned towards him till I told him he was just going past, he just looked at me and stopped right away and let my dad past.

So he's out and about and having a good time messing with everything as per, did some training with him after I finished his cage and it was like I had an extra arm! So clingy with me yesterday lol, I tried to walk out the room to grab something and he was actually flying after me!!!
Then again when my brother came in I told him to watch him so I could get something from my room and he tried to come with me again.
Everytime I moved around the room away from him he was wanting to come over to me, the moment I lifted my arm slightly he was right on me, we spent a good time with him sitting on the table in front of me whilst I did his dishes and he was playing with his toys on the table.

Wonder what he'll get upto today :P

Well he's in a mood today, cleaned him out fine but couldn't let him out as my dad was in the room and we all know how much they love each other!

So after cleaning him out refilling his foot toy dish I was doing his food bowl.

I asked him to go sit up on his perch and he did right away, when I went to give hmi his sunflower seed as his reward he got my thumb and held on, I warned him and he let go only to continually lunge at me, so it ended up with me towering over him warning him with my hand up and 'Acking' at him till he finally gave up and backed off. Needless to say he didn't get his seed dish put in then he had to wait for me to finish sorting out the other birds, when I finished and came back to him he was like normal again, did some noises took his seed gently like he normally does.

Not sure if it's because he was in a mood not being let out (he doesn't always get let out when I clean anyway) or if it is down to my dad being in the room.

We'll see how he is later on.

It's strange how your Amazon knows your dad is a male. Amazons must be more intelligent than us human because they can recognise our sexes, but we don't know which Amazon is male and which is female just by looking. We humans are the ones with bird brains

I think they can tell by chemicals or pheromones. I don't think it's to do with intelligence though They just know.
The reason they prefer a certain sex over another may be because of its experiences with that gender.
