Taming tricks

Lets say WHEN I get my new bird hopefully tonight, I am wondering what is the best trick to use to help tame the bird if it already isnt tame? I would love to start trying to slowly work with Panda while he/she is getting used to his/her, new home while he/she is getting used to me as well. I'd love to try a simple taming technique. Would the best way be getting millet and holding it in the hand depending on the kind of bird that I get?
