Even though I do not have my bird yet I am wondering on the cage size...
Is http://www.walmart.com/ip/Black-Sele...18x57/14047226 this type of cage good for a macaw(depending on size) or do they need to have a BIGGER cage?

Tressa, that's about the size I would recommend for a single tiel. The style isn't bad for a macaw but at the smallest, I would do a 24"x20" and that's for a Mini-Macaw. For a Military macaw you're looking at a 30" wide minimum. Rule of thumb - they have to have enough room, width wise, to spread their wings fully and flap without hitting toys, but also enough room to have toys hanging in there to entertain them.
It also depends on the amount of time spent in cage. I do believe you said you're home most of the day? If they're on a playstand with room to walk about, play, flap, etc. you can lean towards the smaller cage
For a military, if you can afford it and have the space, I would recommend this one from WalMart, though I would definitely shop around

I'm personally more partial to the dome tops. For macaws, they have a tendency to have dominance issues - they like to be in control. Playtop cages are great if your bird doesn't play the "na-na, you can't reach me!" and run away game
Some macaws have a tendency to get aggressive or bossy when above eye level

2 tiels could live in the 18x18 but I would recommend, for the money, an HQ flight cage if you have the space. They usually run about $100-150 and are 32" wide.
Here's the first link I happened to find Googling it, to give you an idea, but shop around a bit and you might find a good sale

Thank you for the help Jenny.
I did spot another cage that on pet co that says for Macaw even though it's not a play top but, here's what it looks like
http://www.petco.com/product/111745/...0Silver-111745
It's more of a dome top. Though, my mom and I would be going through my room and geting rid of stuff and making room in my room.

I have two of the HQ flight cages, one for my Parrotlet and one for my Pineapple Green Cheek Conure, and I highly recommend them. For the money they are a well made and easy to clean cage. My birds LOVE them and use every inch, even my tiny Parrotlet!
The "recommended" size for my Parrotlet was 18x18 -- NOT! My Parrotlet was very unhappy in that small cage and absolutely blossomed when I got the HQ.
The "recommended" size for my Conure was about 20x20 -- NOT again! She was cramped and wanted OUT. She uses the 20x20 for her sleep cage now and LOVES her HQ!
My advice always is to get the largest cage you can fit in and can afford, and you won't be sorry. Don't do what I did: buy the recommended size first and end up spending more money for a larger cage!

Alright, that I do plan on doing.

I agree a 24x36x40 or taller should be the right size for a smaller macaw, but a larger macaw needs the larger cage. Things may change and you are not home 24/7 and the lager the cage the happier the bird when you're not there.
For 2 tiels I have a flight cage and for the other 2 tiels a 22x24x29 and I feel its too small but way bigger than 18x18x30. Personally I don't see much use for 18x18 with the bar spacing more than a half inch. I have an 18x18 and every bird I put in there cannot wait to get out. Sorry, rambling but maybe it will help you decide what you like best! I am always eager to talk cages, obsessing again

Though I did get a new cage for my tiels which is good. Won't be getting a parrot any time soon though.

The HQ flight cages are great! I have one for my parrotlet as well. And he uses every inch of it. my greencheek is in an avian adventure playtop cage, which is a bit smaller then the HQ flight. She often spends time hanging out in Jack's cage. I definitely need to upgrade her a larger cage.
I have found that with birds, the largest cage you can afford, the better

Shandi - I upgraded Libby, my Pineapple GCC, to an HQ flight cage shortly after she came home and she uses every inch of it, just like my P'let! Libby was originally in the "recommended" size, about 20x20. It's now her sleeping cage, and she wants O-U-T of it as soon as she wakes up! The bigger cage, the better for these busy babies!

I hope you can get an employee discount or something, Deby. As far as I am aware, no bird cages at Walmart in Indiana, either.

Thanks Shivani for the awesome siggy!

Stanley (bourkes), Roni (senegal), Elisa (lineolated parakeet) and Doug (pacific parrotlet), Daisy (maximilian pionus), Shira (green cheek conure), Ashlynn, (grey), Taylor (princess of wales parakeet), Joelle (quaker), Benny (cockatiel)

I've never seen one in-store at Wal-Mart but they seem to have them online

I looked lol my walmart doesn't have any cages online except for parakeet cages , figures and I could have used my 10% lol
Local walmarts do not carry the cages as you know. But type in Walmart.com and you can see them but they get shipped from somewhere else so you probably couldn't use your discount. I work at Walgreens and I can't use my discount on line at Walgreens.com

hey Im sorry for writting in your post, but I'm getting a Macaw too, (its a present for myself for christmas hahaha)
anyways I dont actually have wallmart this side of the world... I wanted to get him a big cage, you know with those play things so he can hang around and exercise...
one question should I also put him outside (in the cage of course)
If i let him out, will he eventually fly away, or?? sorry Ive never had a bird, and I always though I would be cool..
and another question I wante do to know where I could get a cage online, at the pet store when Im getting it, theyre pretty small...
I saw a couple here http://www.twenga.com/
but I thought they were pretty expensive?how much should I invest?
oh and another question, how can you get them to talk? I know its dumb, but I always wondered if it was true...

If you are getting a macaw the cage will have to be tall enough to accomodate the long tail and large wings. A 24x36x tall is as small as I would go. What kind of macaw are you looking for? They live longer than most people.
