Large Cage Construction

I was pleasantly surprised when my Dad offered to help construct a new large bird cage for my budgies. He was estimating it to be around 3 feet wide and 6 feet tall (just to give you an idea of what we mean by "big"). He said we could use wood for the frame and metal for the rest. He loves to build things and is fairly good at it, and I know lots about birds, so I trust we can do well in this project!

When making this project, however, I want to make sure the cage is very safe for my budgies. What safe materials should I use? (including the kind of wood, metal, glue, nails, and other such things) What other suggestions do you guys have for the cage? (including sizes and arrangements)

Thanks in advance. I can't wait to start building it!

I've never constructed a cage, so I'm not 100%, but I do know that you should use stainless steel for all your metals (nails, wires, etc) because you need to be sure there's no zinc in the metal. I want to say u shouldn't use glues, but I'm not too sure on that one either. I know a few members here have built cages and a member on the linnie forum just built a huge outdoor aviary for her birds, so I'll ask her what materials she recommends

I don't think you will need any glue. My aviaries are built with stainless steel but I'm not too sure about the wood. Birds of prey don't tend to chew so it's all good Make sure yours don't chew the wood! It's a real pain when you've built one haha!

With the size I would say make it as wide as it is tall. That seemed to work great for my budgies!

I tried to look some stuff up on Google about it. I found that the only truly safe material would probably be stainless steel, just like what Jenny said, and NOT to use the stuff they make rabbit cages out of. I also found that if I were to use wood, I must use safe wood that hasn't been sprayed or anything. I want to get a good idea of what the cage will look like, so I think I'm going to go searching on Google again....

I would try untreated pine - that I know is safe for birds, but I don't know about the budgies ability to chew it... if you could construct it so the wood isn't accessible for them to chew, you might be able to make it work. I know this year's issue of BirdsUSA has a big article on constructing outdoor aviaries, it might have some good suggestions in it

That's what I'm going to try best to do....I really want to take a trip to Home Depot soon to see what they have. My dad's procrastinating, of course....
