Reason to change a hut to a DIY hammock

Levi loved his triangle hut from day one for about 3 yrs. Had the habit of sitting on top so it was like a "hammock". Just before Karma came in Sept. Levi was sitting on the hut when he managed to get a toe caught in the tiny opening where the hanger goes right in front of me. Scared, upset and fighting to get away I grabbed him holding him still til my hubby could come in to open the hangers while I held Levi. This way I took both the hut and Levi out to get his toe out. So I made this hammock for him by cutting off one side on his hut making 4 holes on the ends plus stringing shoestrings through all four holes. It's safe they both love to sit in it, (not together just yet)

I noticed one of the links attaching the hammock was not screwed up. Please check all links daily as birds seem to love to unscrew them and could get their beaks caught in them.

Very good idea, Judy.
Unfortunately not all stuff we can buy for our fids is bird safe.

Wow - great idea! Mine recently chewed through the polly rope holding their tent up, that's a great way to reuse it! I'll have to make one now Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi I was looking for a hut when I came across this http://www.pine4parrots.co.uk/Pages/...utwarning.aspx
I did have a budgie get his foot stuck in one before but I thought it was just because his nails were long but this shows how dangerous they can be!

That's where Levi got his toe stuck in that tiny loop. I'm betting Karma will one day lay eggs in the hammock

Bluey got her toe stuck inside one awhile ago but now mainly likes sleeping on top of hers, I was thinking of taking it out.

I thought it was cute to see Levi sitting on top of his tent using it like a hammock because it sagged. Been doing it for almost 3 yrs but it was just the other day his toe got stuck. So I made the hammock which they love and use. It gives their feet a break from always sitting on perches.

I have a extra small tent I pulled from mochis cage last week. Peeps didn't use it. Bums me out as is payed a decent amount for it from one if the small vendors who make nice stuff for our birds... Mochi sat at the front edge and chewed the middle edge on the one side.... I caught him doing the same today to his peekaboo perch so I kept telling him no. And moved the hunk of brown kraft paper closer for him to chew there... He finally got the idea. I'll keep an eye on his butt to see if he keeps on the paper... Trying to get him and jalapeņo to learn how yo play and use toys. Hopefully when they get moved with the rest if the flock they'll pick it up... Peeps loves to chew the hell out if it. Shelby does at times. I have a whole box of it from the order of the new bricks for the woodstove.
On a plus I did get a couple remnants of anti pill fleece, plastic canvas for the base of the tents, and some stuff to use the sewing machine a friend gave me. Now I just need to find a downloadable use/maintenance manual for it, as it's a kenmore from the 70's, made by singer....

I have a small comfy perch in with Levi and Karma, it has a big knot at the end with a bunch of loose threads. Karma love to sit right there preening the threads. Yesterday I wrapped the bunch of threads with material because I could see it's perfect for Karma to get a toe tangled up. Fids are like kids not everything that is made for them are safe. I'm glad I gave food for thought to prevent injuries to our fids.
