The aviary escapade. [lotsa pics]

Realized I shared pictures on TalkCockatiels but never really mentioned it here (: we built an aviary in the back yard attached to my room for the tiels. Bird nerd level way too extreme. Double flight cage is staying in my room as is, but the tiels and Reptar are pretty much free to come and go.

Asher, Nyx and Rhea haven't come back inside at all, Reptar and Bird have gotten the hang of flying in and out. Took Bird a few days to acclimate to being outside for the first time, but he's loved it ever since. Eventual plan is to divide it in half to give Pan and Nike some free flight space until we can build an add-on or different structure for them.

Definitely still in progress. Need to add in another hanging veggie tray closer to my window, add more higher hanging ropes, plants/herbs/veggies etc around the bottom and hanging on the sides, various toys and a bird bath but this is how the set up stands now. It's just been way too much fun, and with how hot its been outside lately, I'm sure the birds are enjoying the fresh air.

Rhea the forever afraid, taking a leap on the vine swing.

Nyx checking out the mirror I used to tempt Bird outside.

Sitting pretty for the camera.

And finally, the full view from my window. It's like having a zoo exhibit out there!

That looks amazing, and is such a good idea to build it over the window like that! Great job!

We actually added the plants in yesterday, and a makeshift bird bath. Rosemary, basil, parsley, bell pepper in the two planters along with tons of seeds already sprouting of wheat grass, alfalfa, sunflower in the hanging one, and sunflower, salad mix and red lettuce in the lower one more as a treat for the tortoises in the future.

That looks fabulous!
One suggestion though, don't put Tortoises in there with the birds. Bird poo can cause Turtles/Tortoises to get serious eye/respiratory infections that can be fatal.

The aviary escapade. [lotsa pics]

If you ever have the chance, go for it though (: and honestly, some of them haven't! Window is almost always open, but if they want to stay out there, it's up to them. Reptar and Bird are really the only ones who drift in and out over the course of the day. Yeah, it's been hot as heck here lately! Guess we'll see if they migrate inside when it starts to get colder, lol.

Oh no! Never (: the tortoises have the yard. We tried sprouting seeds mixes for them before and the little buggers mowed down every attempt. So we decided to include sprouts for them where they couldn't get to it. The planter itself is in a corner without perches, so it's not in the direct line of fire as well.

Ahhh ok good! Just wanted to make sure! I have heard of some poor Turtles need to be put down because of people keeping them in with Parrots. :\

Looks awesome! My American kestrel's aviary is next to the conservatory so I know exactly what you mean about an exhibit haha
