you can't afford not to looks at this thread!

i haven't been on here in a while, but that doesn't mean i haven't been busy making things for the Cherubs!!!

as i say in all my toy threads- i get all of my "fancy" toy parts from My Safe Bird Store | Discounted Bird Products | BIRD FREE ENVIRONMENT| Free Shipping Available

let start with a DIY Boing!! the fids love it and it is sooo easy

you need:
- rope. i used a rope dog toy from the dollar store, this is one of the toys that unravels easily and there is a lot of rope, the toy looks similar to the end of a noose (for the lack of a better description) with a loop and the rest wrapped around itself.
- a wire clothes hanger or wire. make sure that the rope is a little longer (maybe 5 inches?) than the wire. using the hanger and this specific toy make it work out perfectly!

undo the hanger and straighten the wire. it doesn't have to be perfect, but the flatter, the better.

next, take your rope and unwind it a little and place the wire inside. there are probably a lot of videos that show this, but it is pretty simple. do this at the end of the rope and wire. once it is started you can try to stick the wire into the knot, or at least have the end of the wire inside the rope.

keep winding it around the wire until the end. you might need to play with the rope some to get it to reach the end. when you are done the wire ends shouldn't be showing

after its done, i used my leg to bend the shape into it. Bowie was trying it out (not on his terms though!)

to finish, i cut the stringy ends so no one gets caught and i put some vet wrap on the ends to ensure that the wire would never slip through. (i get 3M vet wrap from Dover Saddlery)

Done!

i actually made two of them! fun, fun

onward! this is a foraging pouch made from a sink mat from dollar tree. if you make this CUT it in half, and don't do what i did and bend it in half until it breaks!!

once you CUT it in half, i added some finger traps to the bottom

then just tie the sides and stuff with foraging things!

also from dollar tree i love getting the rolls of paper. the are a great deal- $1 for a 30"x 15' roll. this is just a simple toy. i cut strips of paper and folded them in hall twice and tied them together- so simple

now for my other toys i made (these have the toy parts from mysafebirdstore)

palm shredder, vine ball, finger trap, small cardboard box (these boxes are PERFECT for budgies!)

mini vine balls, jute sticks, drilled almonds

dollar tree tickets with pony beads and finger traps

rattan balls, finger traps, palm shredder

rattan balls, mini popsicle sticks, colored lollipop sticks, tickets

vine cornucopia stuffed with crinkle paper, capped with a vine ball that is held on my a lollipop stick and has a finger trap stuck in it

i bought some pine and made some of my own toy parts

pine, coconut chunk, cardboard

pine

and last but not least- the paper mat! i made this for my rabbit, but it would be nice for birds. (probably less destructive ones so your 2 hours of mat making doesn't go to waste!)

for this, you will need a whole roll of the dollar tree paper. first you will cut the paper every 6 inches. don't try and flatten it!

once cut, it will try and fold up again. just squish the paper as shown, but to the whole thing

continue until you have 30 of them.

start the weaving process! clothespin- one over, one under etc and leaf some overlap

you will eventually find what way is easiest for you to weave them...

when you are done (you might not be able to fit all of the pieces) fold every other strand over and tuck it into the next one...

then flip it over and do the rest of them.

not bad for my first mat

"oh for me?"

it really ties the room together (not!)

i haven't seen that site yet! when i have some free time i will have to look and compare prices to mysafebirdstore (so far they have the lowest prices), but taking a quick look at what they have fore rope and cordage, i can see that they have some things that MSBS does not carry. looks like my flock will get some different toys

LOVE the dollar store paper! We place pieces under our kitchen chairs to catch all the bird messes. Makes clean up a breeze.

i just wanted to add what the rope toy i use for the boing looks like. this toy is the easiest to unwind and has the longest length out of all the toys

the toy as is in the middle and an unwound one on the outside

also, i bought some of theses toys because they are good for swing/perches... except for my guys not liking them!!
