Strange Brown Stuff in Cuttle Bone

Rose bought Kiki two cuttle bones. One that I put up last night has strange, smelly brown stuff in where the metal thing goes to attach it to the cage. I noticed this today when I went to put it in a nice cuttle bone holder I just bought. It's just a really odd smell and I don't know what this brown stuff is or why it's there. I've never seen it before. Help??

I feel like it might just be something to hold the little metal thing that is supposed to hold the cuttle bone to the cage. Not using it yet. Any more thoughts?

Sorry, let me attempt to describe it.
There's very little of it. It's like...pooh. It's really only in the places where the little bendable metal is to attach the whole bone to the cage. I wiped it out and the only thing left that's weird about it is the smell of the bone, and on the back, there is a sort of smooth tannish tint on the edges, although that might just be normal. I'm really just confused...

Jenny said it might be rust from the metal.

My first though but no, it was way deep in there, they couldn't have gotten poo in there.

I don't know what it is, but it would probably be best to toss it. Better safe than sorry!

Yeah. I'm confused. For now I'm just using the other one that didn't have the metal in it. There is no brown stuff, just a little bit of a smell. I think it should be fine. I'll just go pick up some more, ones that don't come in the packaging so I don't have to worry about the metal rusting and stuff.

Its rust. The metal is cheap steel. I would scrape it off till its clean, then use the Cuttle bone.

I would not trust it with my birds... even if it is only a $15.00 budgie ( don't get me wrong my budgies are worth far more to me than their purchase price!! ) why risk their lives for a $0.99 cuttle bone?? Toss it and get new!! I like to buy bulk ones so I can pick the ones that look the best to me...lol

I've never seen anything like that I wouldn't use it either. Sounds iffy. I buy mine from somebody I get all my seeds off and they're great

Yeah, sounds like rust. Although the fact that it smells funny is weird. Would you describe it as a harsh metallic smell? Because generally speaking rust doesn't have a very strong odour.
