'bedding'

i currently use shredded paper at the bottom of my parakeets cage. i think for me it would be easier to use wood shavings since i have a rabbit so i always have them. so my question is can i put pine shavings on the bottom of my 'keet's cage (where he never touches)?

You and your birdie are so cute!

As long as your Parakeet can't touch the wood shavings, I would assume it's okay. I've always used newspaper and change it every day. I have the grate in each cage so the birds can't get to the paper or their droppings. The one advantage of using old newspaper is that you can somewhat monitor their droppings for signs of any problems.

I'm glad you took the mirror out of his cage and now he likes to come out. They do tend to fall in love with their mirror!

The best thing to use is paper - the wood shavings have a lot of dust in them and birds have very sensitive lungs. Rather than using shredded paper, you can use just plain newspaper, since most people get it delivered anyways. You can also use paper towels, but that can get expensive. If you don't mind cleaning up every day or two, you can also just use the plastic grate with no bedding/paper and just wipe it off at the end of every day

shavings can also breed bacteria very very fast and the bird can get bacterial infections if theyre not cleaned good enough. and the dust as jenny said.

best thing to use is newspaper. you can watch his droppings easily. if an illness pops up, the droppings will be the first to tell you and with wood shavings and shredded paper you cant see them that easily

That's great advice! I didn't know that about the wood shavings, not a good idea to use. I knew you guys would have the right answer!

I get the Sunday paper every week, clip the coupons and use the newspaper for birds -- works out great!

Shavings are in my opinion a no go! I too use full sheets of newspaper. It's easy to maintain and super cheap

Actually i had an episode with my birds due to using the pine shavings. My vet said it did not matter if they could not get into it, it was still bad for them.
I have been using walnut bedding for years and it works out okay

I've heard bad stuff about the scented shavings. I just wouldn't use it at all personally. Me, I use newspaper.
