toys vs space

After having looked at some of the wonderful pictures on here, I'm wondering if maybe more play items are needed.
Bob my Irn is destined for the outside world! a large aviary in the garden.
He's 4 and has been a house bird for that time, I got from the RSPCA after he was left to them when his owner died. he was there for 3 months with no interest.
I persuaded my husband I could take him as we could convert the greenhouse. My husband doesn't like birds in the house.
His 1st experience of this was with my Ducorps' cockatoo Luna.
she had to go when we had kids as her vicious side and demanding nature were too much for me. (she went to a good home though!)
Anyway to the point, Bob's cage was supposed to be more temporary than this but I've had 1 minor disaster after another!
I left it mostly space for him to flap his wings, but he doesn't do this.
Therefore I'm wondering if perhaps some of this space could be filled with toys and he might get more exercise playing? He currently doesn't venture out of his cage but I'm working on taming him. He's getting better everyday.:biggrin5:
Here's a piccy of his cage, what do you think, space or toys?

Try adding a couple more toys and see what he thinks about it. If he doesn't like it then just keep him how he is, if he plays and stuff then he could have some more put in

A boing? All birds LOVE them! I haven't met any bird who doesn't haha!

I vote for a boing, yes. Additionally, I vote for some wooden thing to chew, chew, chew. I'd also suggest a natural perch with some varied diameters. I know that's a lot of suggestions, but if he's going to stay in the cage a while, I'd add those things.

Thanks Nanay, he has almost a boing. It is a curly rope. Just not quite a boing. He has a leather knotted toy with beads. And a wood and rope toy. And a swing. The only time I've seen him play is when he displays to me he'll swing one of his toys. I'm thinking of increasing his hours of daylight as Ringnecks start breeding in December over here and they're agressive at this time. He's taming beautifully.

If you want to prevent breeding behaviors, which is what I think you're trying to do, you want to decrease daylight hours down to about 8-10 a day, though if ringnecks breed in the winter, not spring, it could be different? I've never heard that, but living in FL birds breed year round here every spring and fall  :giggle:

As far as toys go in my fids cages Ricky has a quite few but the only things he uses are his rope perch and snuggle hut. He just doesnt play. Was very bummed because everyones GCCs play but mine. He actually was attacking his miroor yesterday so I have high hopes. Lucy has a bunch. Is finally starting to play with them. Only took 2 months. lol Daisy has a ton LOL. She was the lucky one to be bought at the fair. Heath is always telling me he doesnt know how the birds move through their cages. I already have a bag of stuff for Desi when he gets here.

Rossco does a bundle that looks interesting not seen Bob play. Mentioned to my hubby I'd like Bob as a house bird. Then I left the room. So the seed is sown. I'm expecting an argument. We'll see. I can teach Bob how to play.

Good thinking there, Kate. Just mention it and leave the room so that it can't turn into an argument right away. This way, he doesn't make a statement he later thinks he can't back down on. You save his pride this way.
