Potential Cage?

From the day I saw it I wanted to make it a cage(for anything!) so now I'm thinking for either Avis or as many budgies as will cohabitate together(5 total)
Just measured it's approx 3' x 2.5' x 2'
Thoughts?
Obviously has to be cleaned and a front put on it with a door. Ideally I'd want to get some kind of light source in the back I think.. but the big question is, Avis or budgies?

I like it.

I'd take off any panels on the sides or back and then add some sort of wire in a frame. You might take a look around at some second hand shops or even go to a place that sells 2nd hand fridges and stoves. I know someone who made excellent panels for the sides of their bird cage with the racks from inside an oven and fridge.

Good luck with your project and of course we all want pictures!

I actually have cage pieces I've hoarded for awhile that might work. Stability wise I'm not sure how many panels could come off but it would definitely make it lighter lol mind you I don't really like the idea of it being open in the back, just for cleanliness reasons.
How safe would aluminum screen be? That on the back might help it keep the dust in and let air flow. I don't see them being able to climb it or get purchase enough to chew it. I know stainless steel is best but I really do prefer to use what I have as much as possible lol

You will have to think about perches and how you will set them up if you intend to run them side to side or back to front so your pieces from cages might be the best answer.

I would be concerned about the alum-screening as they might be able to chew or get to it. The rule of thumb is .... if there is a possibility they can do something to an object then don't put it in their reach. I know what you mean about having the back panel on the cabinet to keep poop or things from the wall but it will look bad and messy after a time so you might want to think about having a grate of some sort over that part if you can remove some panels. You can always hang up a large painters tarp or a shower curtain behind the cage to catch any messes.

I'm sure you will come up with some ideas. Check out home made cabinet cages on google images and you will be impressed with the things people create like you want to do.

My worry was less the poop on the wall(already deal with that with normal cages lol) but more the collection of fluff and seeds etc that would build up behind it since it's a big solid piece.
And for the inside wall mess I was thinking corrugated plastic lining the floor and inside walls? I can't get it until next month but it should make it alot easier to keep clean.
Was also thinking maybe cut some "Windows" higher up on the sides/back instead of the whole thing?
Mostly thinking out loud(more or less) lol
The cage panels I have that would fit pretty well are too big for the budgies so I might have to rethink that part..

Sounds like you have some good ideas already.

You can always leave the piece away from the wall at least 6 to 8 inches so you can hoover behind it and wipe down the wall should you need to. I never like having furniture close to the wall especially if one of my birds flops and lands behind a cabinet or my computer desk. The larger opening lets them walk out either side or I can just offer my hand or a perch for them to step up and get them back to their cage.

I like that natural perch you have here. It's good for your birds feet and looks like he likes it too!

I've got years and notebooks full of ideas for lots of things but they're only ideas still lol and I never know if they would work or not. I tend to get all adhd and forget about a project idea when I come up with another too (bad Lauren) lol
My yard is full of baby "weed" trees that sprout out all over the place so I googled the crap out of trees and I found out they are all safe so I've been taking advantage lol almost all my perches are real wood in various sizes. I made beads out of some too for toys(Avis shreds them). I really want to find a good branch that I can set up to stand like a tree with branches for them to perch on.
Can you get stainless steel screws? I asked the guys at the hardware store in my tiny town and they had no idea. All I can ever find is zinc coated. Because then I could just screw branches to the walls for perches.

I also saw this (pic below) on the local kijiji and I just love the idea of the set up. My mom didn't seem so keen on the idea of putting one in my house (she owns it) lol crappy quality pic cause I took it of my tablet lol

I like those pics, it gives you some interesting ideas about how to create a large bird safe room.

[email protected] your mom.... I can sympathize with her it being her house.

At least she doesn't live here so she doesn't have to listen to all the birds lol or dogs. Or cats ^-^
Just no permanent changes to the house to accommodate animals (sad) lol
One day I want a walk in aviary with a whole flock of some kind of bird. Finches/canaries probably. I knew someone who had Bourke's in with his. I loved them

Canary village haha I love it

So I noticed my new boy Neji has eye rings. How dark/light are they suppose to be? Is he maybe older than first thought? I noticed some in Ino's too. They're not very noticeable unless I look really close though and wouldn't show up on pictures. They get pretty freaked out when I stare into their eyes too lol

Iris rings start after about a year old.

Which birds did you see this on? Share some pics with us so I can see? Thanks.

I can't get them to show up on pics. I can only see it if I stare right into their eyes like I'm trying to look into their souls XD
And it was my newest addition, Neji, and either my creamino or albino (don't remember now) thought it was Ino but now I think it may have been Shiro when I had her in my hands moving her to a different cage... That little albino is a brat and ticks everyone off lol looks like an albino lovebird atm too cause she escaped and someone pulled her tail feathers out. Bird has a deathwish lol

I used the sticks from a popsicle maker thing as little food dishes for Avis. They fit perfectly and I can put food in from the outside lol and then I don't have to use a whole big dish for treats and testing if she likes some thing. Felt so genius when I discovered it and had to share haha

That is a cute popsicle treat cup. I like it!!!

As for a budgie looking like a lovie because they have mysteriously lost all their tail feathers......... BEEN THERE. DONE THAT. I've made SPX my budgie look like a lovie many times.

He zigs when he should have zagged and I'm standing there with a pile of tail feathers and him giving me stink eye.

I'm a lovebirb now... SIGH!

He's pretty! And is that eye rings I see or is that just the skin around his eyes? I think a few of mine must be just starting to get them. Luigi lets me stare at him closer and for longer and I notice he has them too but again they're really dark and only noticeable if I look super close.
I totally did that with my Bourke years ago. He was my first ever bird and I felt like I butchered him. I was so scared he would die for some reason(I over worry). Now any time I get only their tail feathers in my hand I let go lol
Shiro got caught by a dog I think. He paws things(toys, animals) and I think he pinned her tail and she pulled free. He was standing over her just staring down at her when I opened the door. She is a brat and escaped/tries to escape all the time. And her wings haven't grown back yet from petland so she falls like a rock. She's lucky she's so pretty lol

That's all eye ring on SPX's eyes. It's pretty large I'm not sure if it gets larger as they get older, here's a larger pic of him where you can really see it clearly. I just noticed on my hen that her eyes are starting to get a white ring which is interesting as she is an odd eyes pied as only one eye shows a ring and the other doesn't.

She's a freak!

She's not a freak she's just unique ;p
What does SPX mean btw? Lol was curious when I saw it before
Mine aren't necessarily smaller rings but lighter. As if they may be starting to come in?
I just like knowing my animals ages. Avis came with a hatch certificate and any rescue/stray kitties I've had were kittens and easy enough to guess at their ages. Birds are just a mystery to me lol considering they're almost fully grown size when they're 8wks old lol
Eventually i do want to try to breed Ino *hides from the Talk Budgies Nazis* but I need the right male, set up, etc any way so it won't be any time soon. But being able to tell if she's over a year will be important then.

Unique = freak. LOL

SPX is what they call Special X fighter pilots who do some pretty bizarre acrobatic flying at super high speeds. When SPX was a wee budgie he did some amazing flying and zoomed a pilot friends head so he was nick named Special X... I called him SPX for short.

So the Talk Budgie team of "knowitalls" tried to talk you out of breeding? lol

They mean well when they get on a rant about not to do this or that. They just don't want someone who doesn't have the experience to jump into breeding if they don't know the pro's and con's of what can go wrong or in case of emergency.

It's good to know what you might get into when taking on breeding your birds.

Thats an awesome name for a bird lol Avis could be one of those. She flies laps and figure 8s around the 2 rooms she can get to and never hits anything and only ever lands on cages, perches, or me lol

The first comment I got from them was the breeding rant. I only had one bird! But I've seen it 100x on other people's posts and it's very discouraging.
The part that lost me with them recently is they decided that I had to read the basics of budgie care(which I'm sorry, budgies ARE basic lol) just because they couldn't see toys in the close up pic of Shiro and cause she was bored and I said I didn't have the expensive store bought toys. So they sent me the links. I was so insulted. When I calmly but clearly explained that i know the basics, I just don't happen to have 100s of expensive toys for each cage to switch around(Oops?). They just didn't respond. Almost any post I've made was met with some sort of criticism and negative assumptions.
They've chased off lots of potential members just from the posts I've seen too. And that one guy here that was asking about breeding and automatically was saying not to criticize, first thing I thought was oh they must have been on talk budgies lol
Well intentions are good and well but they need to work on their execution
Basically I find they're only good for mutations lol
There's a whole forum somewhere else dedicated to breeding budgies too which I think is funny lol

And I still say unique = special, not freak lol

I've heard a bunch of things about TalkB's lately and its not always nice which is a shame as they are our sister site here. It seems that the negativity chases away posters and members which is sad because posters make a board fun. I think they are little too strict there and that chases away people too as well as the negativity.

Oh well, you are here and hopefully in time we will get more members and this place will pick up and be more interesting and fun.
