Putting two finch flight cages together?

I have an extra 30"Lx18"Hx18"D finch flight cage. I have Happy, my one legged zebra finch, and his g/f Honey in my other cage like this one. I had a lightbulb moment and thought about making it one large cage.

Not end to end but like a very large square cage. It would be 30"Lx18"Hx36"D. I thought about removing the back "wall" of each cage and then possible zip tying them together.

That way Happy and Honey would have twice the cage to fly around in. Does this sound doable?

I have those same cages, looking at mine, I think you could, shouldn't be too hard.

I think I'm going to try my hand at putting them together this evening. Fingers crossed I don't mess up two perfectly good cages.

My husband is the hands on person of the house at fixing things. He works off nights tonight so tomorrow I'm going to see if he'll help me so I don't mess up both cages. He's so helpful at these things. Especially if I promise it's not for more birds.

Yay! My wonderful, handy husband was able to put the two cages together just like what I wanted. Happy and Honey didn't know what to think at first but after a while started flying around some.

I left the middle part as open as I could to make it where they can truly fly around from side to side. I can't wait to see them more used to it tomorrow.

They seemed to really enjoy flying around their expanded cages. Even Happy was flitting around like Honey was. I wish I would have thought of this sooner.
