Finches

Went to the bird show today and bought some toys for Sammie and the linnies. While we were there my partner decided she needed these guys

1381605628826.jpg

Red-billed fire finch
Gold breast finch
Lavender finch

She got one pair each. I really wanted the owl finches, but the dietary requirement was different for them so this was easier.

Sorry about the pic quality. They get a little freaked when you get too close.

They're gorgeous, congratulations! I have kept Bicheno finches and I have never read/heard anything about specific dietary requirements. Mine had a foreign finch mix and plenty of fruit and veggies

I admit I know nothing about finches, but she said something about the owl finches needing greens or something. It wouldn't have been a big deal to have a separate bowl, but my partner wanted to keep it simple. I can already see we'll probably end up with a bigger cage and more finches. The lavenders make a pretty sound.

But they are messiest birds! They get poop everywhere.

They are very pretty. I use to have Zebra Finches and I loved them because they were so easy to train and ate all of their seeds, pellets, veggies and minerals straight away unlike any of my other birds .

All finches need greens and such. Owl finches are just the same as the others! Lovely birds. The only finches I DON'T recommend keeping are Lady Gouldians. If you live in a warm climate, that's fine, but here in the UK they just aren't that suited. We lost ours from having the window open very sensitive! I do recommend that you get at least one pair of zebra finches to add to your little finch collection. They're usually the cheapest but they're the cutest Be careful if you intend on breeding all of your finches. My zebras would all fight even in their massive aviary over nests and chicks etc.

We're in Texas (Houston) and it's mostly warm or hot year round. We never have the windows open, it's always A/C and maybe one or two months out of the year we'll have the heat on.

If we add any more finches we'll need a bigger cage :-)

The finches my boss have are zebra and society. And not some green singing finches. They get seed mix and Vegetables just like all the parrots do.
The one time we backed off on veggies we lost a couple. So I am a strong believer that all finches need more then seed.
PS with pairs you are going to need more cages. lol

She bought some pellets, spirulina, meal worms and some some commercial something that is not seeds but supposed to be finch specific. I think it's called meal. She also got some fake ivy and branches to hang around the cage.

I'll be honest, I haven't paid much attention because between Sammie and the linnies I've got more than enough to take care of. We also have 5 dogs, 2 cats and a 60g fish tank. The fish and the cats are also my responsibility, but we share the responsibility of the dogs. We also have 2 human boys, but they are mostly grown and take care of themselves.

This is a great site on finches http://www.finchinfo.com/general/index.php . I hope this is ok to post but this is a great recipe for a finch mineral supplement that was made by a member on FINCHforum http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11830 .

That's the reason I didn't go with Lady Gouldians, even though my finches (canaries ) are inside, it gets cold during the winter...colder than the recommended temperature. I think even an airconditioned room would be too cold.

I don't know. We keep our house at 78 and that's with A/C. Is that too cold? Not that I plan on getting gouldians. If we ever get more I want my owl finches and I also like the cordon bleus.

I don't remember, but I remember reading that whatever the lowest recommended temperature, it was a lot higher than the 55-60 F that my house gets in the winter.

I personally would die in that temp :-) I'm a sun lover and think anything under 70 is freezing :-)

That's why you can live in Texas. I prefer NY's weather, even if it's really cold in the winter and hot/muggy in the summer.
