Zebra Finch baby

I found out on Friday that my Zebra Finches had babies, I gave up on any of their eggs hatching because everytime they layed any the next time I went to the box they were gone, so you can imagine how surprised I was when I saw something wriggling on the floor of the large cage/aviary that they are in to find out it was a baby finch. It was still alive and another bub was near the opening of the box so I put all three further in, the next day checked and two had died, the only remaining one I have been feeding for a couple of days now I did leave it in the box for the parents the first day but then found it cold and on the floor the next morning the parents not caring for it so am now feeding it every 2 hours and have it in a brooder I made a while ago.

Here's the little guy He can use a lot of luck though, I'm not sure what his chances are since I'm guessing he's not much older than 3 or 4 days old but can't be sure. but I'm trying my best for him.

sorry bout my finger in this one, it's more to compare his size

Zebra finches have wonderful ways of hiding eggs and chicks and then suddenly you hear the blood curdling scream of a baby finch Mine were always doing it, I just left them to it! Congrats on your little bub though, I'm excited to see him grow!

I hope the little bloke makes it.

I love Zebra finches; I had them and lots of other finches when I was a kid...gee that was a long time ago.

Cheers,

John.

I feel so horrible, after handfeeding him for three days the little guy died Monday night He looked like he was doing better, wriggling around heaps and had a better feeding response, I was giving him his last feed for the night and on the last bit of food he died in my hand, I can only think that maybe he aspirated I feel so guilty.
The past week has been tough I lost this little guy my mum named him Bugsy then just 4 days before that I lost one of the tiel chicks named Tiny he was 17 days old, I've been in tears for days now and I'm really considering giving up on breeding.

Awh no I'm sorry to hear, rest in peace little ones Unfortunately though, you get that with breeding. I only said it on here yesterday but I'll say it again. Breeding comes with more cons than pros, however, the pros outweigh the cons by far. Your successes are what keep you going. It happens, and it doesn't make you a bad person at all. It's nature at the end of the day. You provide the birds with loving homes and you allow them to breed. Yes it may go bad at times, but look at me! Everybody sees how successful I am with my chicks but if you look at the breeding journal I started for 2014, it's thrown me a lot of bad already! As for the zebra finch chick, you didn't know you had it for starts so goodness knows how long he'd been in there for. You tried to save him by hand rearing him. Baby finches, as you know, are PUNY little creatures. They're delicate and not too strong at all. You did what you could and at least you gave him a chance! He could have been thrown out of the nest and died there and then but you tried. Don't give up breeding, unless you really want to, because I know for a fact you'll do fine
