Unhappy Thoughts for Bailey

So many ups and downs all the time. I know it comes with keeping animals, but life doesn't seem to stop throwing a load of rubbish at me from all angles when it comes to my pets. I just lost two birds, who I'm going to write a separate thread about but hadn't felt up to it, and right now I feel like I'm a bit lost with Bailey

I took Bailey to the vet in May because I was struggling to manage her weight. Since losing her puppy fat she has been nothing but skin and bone. I would give her like a 1.5 now when condition scoring her. It's just not good at all. I explained to the vet that she exercises often, eats well (finally, that was a problem too at first) and is as bright as a button in herself. She has parasite prevention treatments as often as she should be having them and they're darn good brands too, not cheap stuff. The food she is on is also a very reputable brand and is completely hypo-allergenic

The vet told me, to be on the safe side, that I should worm aggressively for the following 3 months to see if it would help at all. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped one bit so far and if anything she appears to have lost even more. He told me at the end of the 3 months I could have a blood test done to see what was going on inside if she hadn't gained any weight. Well as she's starting to look like she's lost more we have decided to get the test done in the next couple of days. The test will be looking at her kidney function as she may have kidney disease They said it would have been congenital if she does have it

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that she can get through it okay without any nasty results. I would be mortified if it turned out that she had it

Here she is sat with me a few hours ago

She looks so miserable and tired She's not like this all day, but she does have some crashes

Please keep us in your thoughts. I will update when I know what is going on

Oh no, hopefully it is nothing to major Daisy. She's a gorgeous girl! Is this the older dog you have or one of the 2 pups you got a year or 2 back? (So many pets and names on the 4 talk forums, I lose track of them all)

So sorry to hear about Bailey.

I had a bit of a problem like that with Miss Piggy. Her brother's weight is fine but she just would not put on weight. She was wormed for all but tapeworm which I didn't worry about as she is not in contact with other dogs or their droppings and does not get raw meat or offal. So I started feeding both her and her brother meat logs that I can get from Aldi. They are 3kg one with chicken and the other with beef. Both contain pasta and vegetables. I have since stopped with the chicken as it seems to give them bad smelly wind. And I cut down on their dry food. She has slowly put on weight. She will never be a heavy weight as it is just not her build. She also gets a bit more food than her brother who puts on weight much more easily. Also has there possibly been any stress in her life. Piggy lost most of her weight when her father passed away, I thought I was going to lose her too. It was no surprise with her father as he was nearly 14 and it was just a case of old age with him. She also didn't seem to be depressed, it was just the weight loss.

Do the worming treatments you are using cover tape worm. I don't know if it is a problem over in the UK but it can be a big problem over here in country areas particularly.

I'm guessing it's the kidneys. I have an approximately 10y/o tuxedo cat that adopted me in 2006, and I'm pretty sure that I'm dealing with kidney disease. He's lost a lot of weight. I have him on a special diet.

To make you feel better...I'm also thinking that she just feels very tired, and not miserable. I've had celiac disease for 12 years now, and there are days that I look just like that as I just want to curl up and let the world go by. I'm not hurting, just incredibly exhausted. That's what I'm seeing in her eyes. Just very, very tired.

You're probably the very best person in the world for pet or person to be around if/when they are sick. She's got the best care she needs: you. I'm positive she feels your love and I'm also positive as rain that it comforts her. Please let this comfort you as much as you are providing comfort for her.

Thank you all so much for your comforting words. I'm sorry I haven't addressed you all individually but you all know how much it means to me

I finally managed to get in at the vets yesterday and we had the blood work done first thing in the morning. He said she had gained weight, not lost it!!! I couldn't believe it. She's gained 100g. I know it's not a lot but it's something. I genuinely thought she'd lost a lot more

They told me they'd give me the results as soon as I knew but as the testing was done in house we would find out later that day

Well, my driving instructor turned up an hour early so I literally had to drop Bailey off at home and grab my money to give him while I ran over to the car apologising. I drove for about 20 minutes and I heard my phone ring. I thought it would be a family member and I got really cross and pulled over. I had a voicemail and thought, oh joy, most likely mom. I listened and it turned out to be the vet! I thought that surely something was wrong if they've called back so suddenly. But nope. Literally everything came back as a completely clean bill of health. There's not a single thing wrong with her at all

I opted for the more in depth blood work as opposed to the pre-anaesthetic checks that were recommended. I wanted to make sure that she got completely looked into, not just scraping the surface

So, me being me, panicking as per! At least my mind is at ease now and now we know she's slowly but surely gaining some weight Literally cried for ages I was so so so happy. We genuinely thought we'd of been stuck with her having an uncomfortable life and we weren't too sure what we would do should that happen

Again, thank you all so much

I just thought, now this thread got a little happier, that I would share some photos I took a couple of months ago of Bailey on one of our walks

She can be a real pain in the butt sometimes

She loves fetch, even if the ball is a little too big for her and her tiny head!

You can achieve any trick with clicker and target training... even hovering

She is a very elegant dog

She has little dog syndrome

But most of all, she smiles a lot
