Introducing Storm and Sky

So I went to a bird show this saturday. It was supposed to be a canary & finch show....a safe show (I already have my bronze canaries and am perfectly content as far as finches are concerned ).

Last time they had a couple of cockatiels and some parrotlets, also safe since I can resist them (they are pretty expensive). But NO, there had to be a guy there with a whole bunch of diamond doves. Now I know it's weird, especially since I live in the city, but I really like pigeons. They are cute and smart and I almost got doves as my next bird, but believe it or not it was easier for me to find linnies for sale than doves. But this guy had all these cute "mini" doves and they were only ten dollars! I couldn't resist and had to buy a pair.

They are so tiny, you can see them next to Phoenix, my canary. And so soft (not that I handle them, just the first time to get them out of their box) and relatively calm. And I love their little "angel feathers" (the soft, fluffy feathers they are currently molting) and their little blink/bob they do with their heads, and their cooing.....

So, here is Storm and Sky. Storm is the male (I'm pretty sure) and he has a white tail. He has a ring with the year 2012 on it. Sky is the female (probably) and has a white rump. She doesn't have a ring, but they guy said they were from last year's clutches (although I never really believe people trying to sell me a bird because they lie about the age).

They are beauties!! I love doves, I feed the mourning doves (along with a lot of other birds) out on my front balcony... They know it is a safe place so they will sit and chill up there!

Very cute litttle doves! Congrats! I am still not sure how you can resist parrotlets tho. They are awesome

I've kept and bred diamond doves for about 4? years now, maybe more! My hen passed away a while back now so poor Dmitri is on his own. Guess who he's recently made friends with? A group of 5 Japanese quail that I recently got He sits with them, sleeps with them, eats with them. He's got to be 5-6 years old at least at the moment. You'll love having them! The only downside to diamond doves is that they can be extremely skittish and end up knocking flight and tail feathers out like no tomorrow Congratulations on your new additions!

Oh P.S, you just try stopping them from breeding

Do they really breed all year long? Or do they have seasons like canaries/linnies/etc.? As for skittishness, compared to canaries they are calm, so that works for me.

Maybe mine have always been so flighty because they live in aviaries? They don't have to interact with me all too much! And mine would breed all year round. I'd take the nest pan out and it would be the food bowls. I'd change to hanging feeders and they'd nest on the floor. Can't win!

I love this pic of Phoenix, he looks like he's thinking "What The Heck are these things?"
