Due to mice we renovated the tiel aviary earlier this year, and I leave a poison trap down having tried everything else.
So today I went to clean them out, there was an awful smell.
I thought maybe dead mouse but no, worse!
A huge RAT dropping!
They chewed a hole into the indoor area, luckily not where the birds can get.
I've wired the inside and screwed a piece of 2x2 to the outside. + another piece of wood!
Also had exterminate round and he put bait down.
I know some if you are thinking its only a rat when you have snakes and bears and stuff.
I'm worried they'll get in with birds and birds'll get out! :(
I'm gonna get some more weld mesh tomorrow and double wire the whole thing!
Hopefully not too late.
I hate rats!!!

you are right to worry about rats and an aviary. they can harm birds and they can spread disease and contaminate their food

I know! My friend caught lymes disease off one and her sons face froze and we thought he had a stroke! It was awful.
I know they'll eat my birds if they get in there!
Trying not to think about it.
This is not a good year for my aviary.
:(
No sleep for me tonite.

can you move your birds indoors for the moment until it is fixed?

Hole fixed.
Need wire just gotta get through tonite.
Exterminator thinks ok as I cleaned them out and no food in flight. Only indoor area and its wired all the way round. No way through.
Thinks they'll eat bait instead as easier to find.
Makes sense.
Its my awful.neighbours fault!
They have so much rubbish out back!

can you complain about it then? that can become a public health problem if it is attracting rats

It's good it's being sorted out.

As for the double mesh, you can put a layer of plastic mesh behind your metal mesh. It works great for my birds and I even used it for my Indian eagle owl. It's really safe and super clean too :D

Thanks Jenny,
I'm totally freaked out over it,
been down the garden lots to keep checking.
Poor birds have no millet dangling!
all green stuff removed early.
I'm worried they'll end up in the house like the mice did.
They shouldn't be able to get in though.
It won't do my OCD any good!!!!
My hands are a mess where i wash them too much already!
