Necropsy results so far
I finally heard back from my lovely AV a few hours back. He did the necropsy on Clyde (orange winged Amazon for those who don't know). This is what we know so far...
1. Clyde did not 'go light' like the other birds that had passed away and if anything was still very fit
2. His kidneys, liver, lungs and everything where clear
3. He had intestinal bleeding which appears to have come from not eating (though I see my birds eat little and often)
4. He had a very large build up of grit in his crop
What is to happen next? Tissue samples are going to be sent off to a specialist to see if we can get to the bottom of it. Right now we are thinking there is either an infectious disease which has flared up (though unlikely) or there are fumes in the house. The symptoms really don't match up though and as you can imagine we're all very confused and upset
My vet was gutted to hear of Darwin's passing. He absolutely loved that bird
I don't understand where the grit has come from. I have removed all cement perches and such just in case, but I believe if it was insoluble grit then it could have come from his many previous homes. I never feed my psittacines grit and never will
Regarding the intestinal bleeding, my current birds are going to be put on to a medication that will line the intestines to prevent any of this happening to them too. They're also going to be put on to Baytril
I hope you can all bare with me. I'm just so destroyed. I've lost such a large part of my life and every five minutes I'm checking up on the remaining birds, cringing when I walk over to the cages hoping I don't see another bird dead. Toby said not to build up my hopes with them doing well and he can't guarantee no more will pass away
Both my home and people from the rescue where I got the birds from are going into quarantine as recommended. The rescue have been amazingly supportive of me and are actually paying my vets fees. They were very concerned about me and really are sorry that such horrible thing would happen to us
Fingers crossed for the rest
