Linnie has constipation again - please help

Recently I talked about Janosch's digesting problems.

https://www.talkparrots.com/showthread.php?p=255457

Today he is very bad again.
Most of the time he sits in his sleeping cabin fluffed up and sleeping.
He hasn't eaten his slice of apple with the lactulose for nearly one week.
But since yesterday he was ok, he eats much cucumber and chickory.
This morning I felt he was a bit bad, so I caught him out and applicated the lactulose with a syringe into his beak. But it doesn't seem to work.
He only made some very small poops today.
Fortunately he gets up from time to time for eating, drinking and a bit preening.
It wouldn't make sense to call the emergency service again, because I know what his problem is: constipation
I'll call our Avian vet again on monday, but do you have any further ideas how I could help him through the weekend?

I am sorry to hear your little one is ill. I have never dealt with this so have no help for you. One thing my green cheek conure adores is a few drops of fresh orange juice in a bottle cap. This always makes her poops very liquid. Do you think he would drink orange juice?

Im so sorry for you both. I hope he feels better soon. Are you on Facebook? There is a parrot first aid group for situations like this. Maybe join the group. They have great tips. If I find any more info I'll post it here. Keep us updated.

Thank you both for your help, these are very good ideas.
It was the same as last time. In the evening Janosch improved, he had a huge dinner, began to preen Paulchen and went to "bed" again.
Next morning he would get up as if nothing had happened.
If the constipation is severe the lactulose obviously needs one day until it works.
Since this morning he has been able to poop again.
Before their breakfast I offered him a piece of grape with lactulose, and fortunately he ate it, I hope tomorrow he will also do.
Ialso found a good emergency service in the net, look here:

Glad he is feeling better.
You mentioned cucumber...I read that someone's bird got constipated from eating the cucumber peels, the bird couldn't digest them and then when the vet gave him some medicine, he pooped out all the cucumber peels that were blocking him up. It wasn't a parrot (I think it was a crow) but maybe you should peel the cucumber before giving it to him (if you don't already).

How is your little Janosch?

I found this information on the thread below: "To cure constipation, I suggest to provide food such as oat groats and whole wheat grains (both grains contain bran for cure of constipation) Here are 2 pictures I can shown you of my budgies eating a mix of oat groats and whole wheat grains (both soaked for 2-3 hours before serving)." http://talkbudgies.com/showthread.php?t=81696

There is also some interesting stuff here under Fritz's comments: http://talkbudgies.com/showthread.php?t=76097&page=3

Thank you so much for your care, 4thebirds!
Today Janosch is feeling ok., but he refused to take his lactulose.
He also gets milk thistle, dandelion and chickory for the liver and digesting.
I had a long call with our Avian vet, she'll do x-ray on Friday although she can't promise to find the reason in the digesting organs of such a small bird.

Have you asked her about probiotics made specifically for birds? It has good bacteria that aid in immune system function, digestion, and bowel movements. I give it to Mina and everyone once a week. I use AviBios below. I feel so sad for him. It is horrible when you are not feeling well. Please keep me updated.

Thanks, 4thebirds, I'll ask her about the probiotics on Friday.
Janosch's intestinal flora was examined recently and is excellent.
We fear that there could be a barrier somewhere in his gastrointestinal tract.
Perhaps a swollen liver or swollen kidneys?

Janosch got x-ray today, and his inner organs are fine, no overgrowth of liver or kidneys, the lung looks fine as well as the bones and joints do.
So he must learn to eat more humid food. He is a seed junky. He eats fruits and veggies, but not enough to have a good digesting.
So this evening both got fruits, veggies and a parrot mash from our favorite bird store with only one teaspoon of seeds on it.
Currently they look on it sceptically and eat some seeds sometimes.
But I hope they'll try the mash soon. In my opinion it tastes nice.

You can also try soaking and or sprouting his daily seed allowance, that will up the hydration in it while giving him his beloved seed!

I just thought of something. On he talkbudgies forum they talk alot about herbal teas (no additives and no caffeine) for birds. I give my birds some on ocassion and they love it. I wonder if this can help. Different teas have different uses. I give dandelion root and white tea. A few others. They love the white tea best I think.

I used herbal tea to soothe Janosch's stomach when he was vomiting once, and it worked. In summer I offer fresh dandelion when the quality is fine.
This evening I offered two teaspoons of seeds and parrot mash for both, and Janosch ate fine.
I'll also soak seeds like ParrotletsRock and our Avian vet recommended.
Janosch won't be allowed any more to sit in front of the seed bowl eating dry seeds for hours.

Try some herbs
Here they sell riodite herbs. I suggested them to a Lady I am helping as she has a plucking macaw.
He is Much better and our vet is pleased with his progress. Thinks it was due to a kidney problem irritating him.
