I think it is good that you check on him often, he's probably lonely in his hospital enclosure. Can he have a few toys(maybe paper ones)? Enrichment can make the time go faster for him.
I gave him a chew toy and some millet today but I don't want to put too much in there for him to trip over. I am thinking of using some string to hang a toy or two from the side of the bin so that he doesn't have to step on it

Oh, goodness, what a fright! I am sure he will be fine because, even if he was to lose his leg (he won't because he's using the foot which is not swollen or discolored -indicating good blood flow -believe or not, broken bones are not the danger when it comes to leg or foot trauma in birds, it's the danger of lack of proper circulation), he would have managed quite well with just one.

Jill so glad Chewy is home. I am praying for his mending and restored health. I am sure all the love that you and your husband are giving him will make him better soon. He is so lucky to have you both. Keep us updated please. Thanks.

Update: Chewy had his first vet recheck yesterday and it went very well! She said he is looking great considering what happened to him. His bum foot is not discolored or swollen or anything abnormal. He's not picking at his bandage at all (yet ) but he's still not putting any weight on that leg at all. She is letting me skip next week's check up and wait 2 weeks to reassess. I'm hoping they don't have to put him back under anesthesia to recheck his leg, but we'll see. 1 more week of medication, thank goodness, that is the least favorite part for him and I! So far, so good!

Hi Jill,

It's great to read that chewy is recovering well, that must be a load off your mind.

I'm sending positive thoughts his way that things continue to improve for him, and that he makes a full recovery.

Cheers,

John.

We brought Chewy down into the living room where we spend most of our time and where the other birds are He is still in his hospital cage for a couple weeks, but at least now he has company again!

Muffin came to visit him

Snuggling with his soft friend. This guy also helps him because when he tries to sleep, he falls over a lot because he is off-balance without being able to use his other foot yet

aaaaand nap time

That's a good set up Jill, and I'm sure he's much happier now that he has company, I guess his recovery is all about time now.

I bet he spends lots of time telling his little doggie friend how he broke his leg and looking for sympathy, which is a male trait.

Cheers,

John.

Awww, poor guy! So glad to hear he is doing well and is on the mend! That's a great idea for a hospital cage, especially since he can't get his injured leg caught in any bars!
