Question I`m new

Hello everyone.

My name is Marie and I have two little budgies. I joined the parrot forum because I`m thinking of getting a conure in the near future. There are so many parrots out there and the one I saw is such a cutie and lets me pet his head through the cage door and closes his eyes when I pet him. I don`t know much about conures other than what I read online. Can anyone enlighten me as to what kind of bird he is??? Some people seem to prefer quakers and Linnies (whatever they are)...Help please and thank you for welcoming me in the group. I also belong to Talk Budgies.

Welcome to the forum! I have two green cheeked conures, they're an absolute blast. Never a dull moment when they're around. Do you know what type of conure you saw? The aratinga conures (like suns and nandays) are known to be LOUD, but the little pyrrhua's (sp? like green cheeks and maroon bellies) are much much quieter. I think my cockatiels make more noise than my green cheeks.

Welcome! I'd definitely recommend a GCC. Sounds like the one at the pet store is a cutie!

Hi everyone and thank you for the warm welcome. The little guy is a green cheek conure of about 8 months old. He seems very friendly when I put my hand in the cage door. I pet him and he closes his eyes. I`m not sure if it`s a she or he and the people at the pet shop don`t either. They hand fed him for a long time and they pet him each day when they change the food and water and cage stuff so he stayed friendly. I can hardly wait. I`m going to reserve him today. Youpeeeee.

Marie

I`m correcting myself here as the GCC is 4 1/2 months. Even better and I`m picking him up tomorrow after I get my cage set up. I`m sooooo looking forward to it. My two budgies (Limonade & Ocean) should get a treat too. In the pet shop, the GCC is in a cage facing budgies so he won`t be intimindated by the noise...Especially where it`s quiet here and there are only two budgies.

Also, I don`t know if it`s a male or female so I`m figuring it`s a male just for name sake.

Any ideas on a name for the little one???

How exciting that you are going to go ahead and get him. There's a really cute little GCC here at our petstore too. He's my little buddy when I stop by to visit him. It's fun to see him interact and do little tricks for attention. I'll be interested in learning more about GCC from the forum and as you get to know your little guy.

for you on getting a green cheek, you won't be disappointed. They are pretty quiet compared to other conures, although my Ozzy has a mouth on him when he starts , they're very playful, always active, and can be very cuddly, but they can also be a bit nippy when the dreaded hormones kick in. I'm sure you're gonna have a blast with your new baby, be sure to talk to him a lot, they do have good talking ability, and will pick up fast, my Ozzy has quite a vocabulary.

Yes!! I almost didn't get a conure because of the noise. I lived with a Blue Crown a long time ago and she was very loud. I did my homework and learned that as BirdyBea mentioned some conures are much quieter. My green cheek is not loud to me at all. I LOVE her!!

There's a Blue Crown for sale here, listed for months now. The ad says the owner doesn't have enough time for him. I've been really tempted to have a look, but sometimes the noise with my three, is quite enough for me. I did do research and Blue Crowns can get very loud. I don't know what it is with fish and birds but it seems I don't know when to stop!

It's MBS and MFS, there's no cure, you can get therapy but sites like these will just make it worse

Congrats on the purchase of your green cheek! They are very sweet, loving birds but have one heck of a teenage phase at 8 months, he's coming up on his birdie puberty (if I have the timing right on the gcc) so in a few months he might get a little nippy with you because he/she is hormonal. It'll pass And they are quiet little things the two at our store do kissy noises and say pretty bird! They're such little dolls!

Hi everyone and thank you for your comments. I`m picking up the little guy tomorrow Saturday afternoon after I set up the new cage in the morning. I`d have to be nuts to have borrowed the money to get this little guy but he was in the pet shop for about 3 months and each time I walked by, I couldn`t resist and this week was my downfall as I dared to put my finger in the cage and pet him through the cage door and he stuck out his head to get petted and when I scratched his head, he would close his eyes. That was it......I was hooked. My companion loves him already too.

Now for the important stuff too. I don`t know if he is a male or female cause I think the testing can only be done by DNA but I need a name for the little critter.

Any ideas? You all have such wonderful names..

Let me hear some names so I can call him/her by the right name as soon as our new baby comes home. I live in an apartment but I`m taking the chance to have the little critter along with my two budgies. Zootherapy is sooooo wonderful for the soul.

Thank you dear friends.
