Hello! New to this forum, but I'm a member of talk parrotlets. I have a dilute blue male parrotlet named Loki (hatched 11/28/10). I also have 2 border collie/black lab mix dogs - Saphira and Scooby (bro & sis), a cat named Yoda, and many tropical fish. I love my animals and Loki brightens my day! I've recently fallen in love with the green cheek conures! I've been doing a lot of research, but MORE info is very welcome! Haha! My husband agreed to let me get another bird, but 2 is my limit... :( Well, I guess someone has to keep me in line or I'd have as many animals as I could afford to take care of! I found a breeder who will have babies available in 2 - 3 months.

Christa,
I have a LOT of birds. I had wanted a pineapple green cheek for about ten years. My daughter wanted a bird, and so I got her the bourkes. She is a great little kid's bird, and we couldn't have made a better choice for my daughter. At the time I told everyone I would also get myself a bird soon, but they didn't have any pineapples. I fell in love with lots of other birds, but when the store actually got in a pineapple green cheek, the only one they've had, ever, I had to have her. I can honestly say that if it came about that I was told I would have to go back in time and purchase only one of the birds I got for myself, but my other birds would never know me and, therefore, never miss me, the bird I would want most would be my green cheek. I've been told my green cheek is atypical, and most are not as good as she is, but I don't think anyone on this forum would say she is unusual. This forum in filled with green cheek lovers.

Hi Christa! It's Jo Anne, from Talk Parrotlets!

You already know what I say -- a BIG YES  to a Green Cheek! I totally agree with Nannay! If I could only have one bird, it'd definitely be Libby, my beautiful Pineapple Green Cheek!!! DEFINITELY!! :love-smiley-011:

Thanks for the welcome! The breeder that I've found has normals breeding right now. I sent an email asking what other colors they breed. I really LOVE the pineapple coloration! Jo Ann, your Libby looks like a tropical ray of sunshine! But a regular is fine with me too. It's their personality that attracts me, anyways! I'm in no hurry either. Gives me more time for toy shopping! :) I'm not sure which is more fun - buying the toys or watching them play with the toys! I sure enjoy watching Loki monkey around! :D

You are welcome to disregard this next piece of advice, but I believe you should wait for exactly the green cheek you want. You have a limit of two birds. You want to have exactly the second bird that you are hoping for.

Is the dilute blue parroltet the same mutation as the American white? There is an American white in the clutch with my daughter's blue parrotlet, and I was wondering if that is what Loki looks like, too.

Thanks, Christa! She's a real sweetheart, a clown, a cuddlebug, and smart too! I agree with you, the personality of Conures is the big draw! Yes, wait to get just the bird you want, it's worth the wait!

I will and my two cents. We have four conures, and we love them! That said, I now prefer my cockatiels over my conures. It has happened slowly and I am amazed I feel this way. Until you have one you just don't know, at least I didn't. I find its their demanding noise levels and the mess they make. I spend twice as much time cleaning one cage as I do on two tiel cages. Conures are very energetic, tiels are more laid back.
I know you will enjoy your conure, they do steal your heart. Mine did and I am a devoted parront.

I guess four Conures would make more noise (and mess) than my one Conure, but I find Libby is very quiet for the most part, and she's really not that messy.

As an example, when I'm running the vacuum cleaner, she loves to whistle, chirp, and make other noises. I encourage her to do this, making noise right along with her! I find this helps her "let off steam". She makes a whistling contact call (not loud) for me now and then, and if I whistle back from wherever I am in the house, she's satisfied, and goes back to playing and talking to herself.

We don't have any children (we're retired), just 3 dogs, Libby and my Parrotlet, so generally our house is fairly quiet. When the dogs bark at the UPS man (they will NEVER get used to him!), Libby "barks" too -- a louder yell -- but stops immediately when the dogs stop barking and she sees she doesn't get any attention from it.

One last example, after lunch, we always take a nap. I say "naptime" and the dogs make a beeline for our bedroom. Libby climbs into her tent that's in her daytime cage and takes a nap too. When I get up, I whistle my contact call to her, she answers, pops out of her tent, and the afternoon begins!

Now she is louder than my Parrotlet, who just makes little "peeps", but still not noisy to me. All birds make "noise" of one kind or another, but to my old ears Libby's chatter is joyful and I love it!

Nanay, the American White and Dilute Blue are one in the same. It's really hard to catch his colors on camera - he looks white in pics. But he has a blue dusting all over and some feathers have a turquoise glow and his rump and wings have blue violet.

The Brute Squad - I do love cockatiels too. Mine were so sweet. I've had 3 in the past. I got to interact with a cinnamon gcc and a sun at the bird store (not where I'm getting one though). The sun is pretty loud, but the cinnamon wasn't too bad.

Haha! I have 3 kids and 2 dogs and I'm not sure who is noisier! But the dogs listen better!

Well, I don't think I have much of an opinion yet as I've only had my green cheek for 5 days, but so far, I LOVE him!! And as for noise, so far he sounds to me like a duck or something! Nothing loud or screechy yet - just a sort of qwuacking, but I'm sure that will change. :) I too did lots of research and believe I made a good choice for my family. I also have a parrotlet that I love too but there is definitely a difference between the two!

LOL! Krys, when I was at the bird store, there was a sun conure that made a quacking sound (when she wasn't "yelling" for attention). I asked her if she knew she sounded kinda like a duck... LOL! She just looked at me.. maybe that was a "Nooo, I sound like a conure!":giggle:

Nanay, I thought I'd put in that I have decided to wait. I like the yellowsided and the breeder I am going through has pairs that can produce them. He will let me know when he has any. I'm in no hurry. :)

You won't be sorry that you waited for the one you really wanted. I can't take my eyes off Shira, sometimes.

I know what you mean, Nanay! Libby is SO entertaining, I love watching her! I looked at her this afternoon while I was watching Judge Judy and there she was, laying on her back on a patio perch, playing with one of her toys and mumbling softly (Libby, not Judge Judy!).

She loves being with me, but is also so good about playing and entertaining herself, which is perfect for me! (As I'm typing this, my P'let is riding on my wrist and Libby is climbing all over their climbing net, playing with all the toys I attached to it.)

It makes me happy to see both of them so happy!

My friend in Texas has a green cheek. She sends me videos of his antics and it never fails to make me laugh!
