Hello, my name is Nicole, i recently aquired Joey my 6 year old Nanday conure, and am very interested in learning how to expand the bond we are already sharing, he loves scritches and dancing but can be agressive towards other people while on my shoulder, there are times when he allows me to touch more than his head, back, i havent tried his wings, he came clipped but would love to harness train him so that he can enjoy the out doors with me.

Welcome,
My suggestion would be to try some training for treats. Most conures love to do tricks.

I would love tips on harness training right now were working on him getting used to going onto the t perch as once on shoulder thats where he sits unless were on the couch then he comes down for scritches, i also know that even though i can pet his entire back getting him to let me touch his wings is going to take patience, he loves sunflowers however for a training treat would that be good, i know they are fattening.

lol thats okay russ loves goats milk and cheese I give it to him because theres almost no lactose in goats product even lactose intolerant people can have goats product alot of times :).

Well what kinda harness do you have?

i use the aviator harness

it's going to be harder of course cause hes six but its still very doable.

So you prolly know youll have to get him very used to have his wings touched as you kinda have to man handle them.

After your conure has good trust in you you can begin you want to make sure he trusts you before or it can ruin the bond.

So i get my birds used to the aviator in steps

1) let the bird play with the harness(no real nibbling but let them get used to it)
2) now try putting the harness so its just touching or its on top of the bird give alot of scritches to let him know harness is a good thing dont go to the next step till he is comfortable enough to be scritched
3) now put the head piece on give em lotsa scritches and treats let him get used to it, you can take it off and put it on a couple times till he doesnt mind
4) nows the hard part. This is why you need him to be really used to touching the wings, so now slowly dip the wings in you dont need to open the wing just widen the girth and bpull it in
5) other wing
6)now tigthen and presto
7) try to distract him from chewing the harness
8)take him outside and sit down dold the harness and him close itll take awhile for him to absorb

Well i hope this helps good luck :)

Thanks for that advice, i know it will come in handy when we get to that stage, i know it wont be tommorrow cause were working on the bond first and foremost before we try anything stressfull, i took him to get his nails trimmed hes good in a towel, though i havent tried nor will i unless its absolutely necessary for his safety, he loves scritches and when i give scritches i try to include more than just back of neck i gently rub every part of his back until he grunts thats enough, with every session i get further, and have even successfuly rubbed his feet, i know that were still beginning to bond, ive had him about a week and he's already regurgitated on me and tried to "um hem" with my hand, that was stopped, lol.

Two of my birds just simply will not what so ever wear a harness. Joey acts like he's dying and squirms and Chewee won't stop chewing it regardless to how much I try to distract him haha!

lol I had a budgie who used to regurgitate to me, lol at least you know he likes you, and perfect hell get really used to touching if you keep doing that, good luck :)

ive had some like that too Daisy its really frustrating when they wont stop chewing Ive actually rubbed it in nontoxic strong tasting stuff before. Like I had one bird who hated garlic so i just rubbed garlic on it mixed with water

well joey and i are making progress, not only will he let me give him scritches and gently pet other parts of his back, ive been able to gently rest my hand on his entire back for longer and longer periods of time, which i know is good cause that means he's getting to trust my hands are good, i can even pet his wings but havent really tried anything else yet cause i know that trust must be earned, though he is really spoiled and if he's on my shoulder and i rest my hand on my chin he will nibble my hand until i give him scritches, lol its cute he trys to get rid of any blemishes on my hand, and with handrearing cockatiels thats alot especially when they learn to step up and scratch my hand with their claws, i love having joey because even though i love my cockatiels and my babes, i know that all the work i put into him, will build a trust between him and me, and he's not going anywere, lol.
