Puck and I say hello

Hello!

Some of you may know me from Talk Cockatiels, where I started a while ago asking questions and gathering infos with a view to get a cockatiel.

Fact is that yesterday our bird chose us and...

He is an hand-raised white-fronted Amazon.

He is adapting very well, has started eating ten minutes after arriving home and there's a lot of beak grinding going on.

Looking forward to this new adventure with Puck and with you all...

Thank you, Kayla!

He's still a baby, just 9 weeks. i still can't believe how easily he is adjusting, he has started flock calling to us already and settles down when we answer. It's hard not to rush in the room when he's calling, but we don't want to give him bad habits.

Sometimes I wonder who is trying to train whom.

Thank you, Anna.

Right now he's busy demolishing a carrot, I'm not sure how much of it he's actually eating but I'm definitely grateful he's finding it more interesting of the awful seed mix he was weaned to (I spent a good chunk of yesterday afternoon picking sunflower seeds out of the mix).

He's very interested in everything and seems to think that 'hand in cage' means 'novelty!'we are trying to offer him new foods every day. a few minutes ago I was brushing seed husks off the corners of the cage and he grabbed the brush with beak and foot and tried to manouver it around.

We are in for some interesting times, for sure.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new baby! You will have your hands full with an amazon in comparison to a cockatiel (quite different LOL).

Thank you, Karin, he's really something, both hubby and I are smitten with him.

4thebirds, thanks! LOL, a friend of us used to say I have a penchant for 'dangerous friendships' (or at least difficult ones, our last dog was a Siberian Husky)

Here's a couple of pics I took earlier today

Thank you, Judy!

A few minutes ago he did his first step-up on my finger, and then proceeded to move to the wrist, I guess he believes he's an hawk. Right now he's perched on the printer, looking around and chucling/muttering to music.

I think I'll start a thread for him in the photo/video section, can't resist showing him off...

Welcome to the forum Puck is beautiful! I was going to say though, how did they wean him at 9 weeks old? That is very young for any Amazon species to wean

Thank you, Daisy.

I honestly don't know, his Cites papers are dated July 23, that would give his hatching day as July 13. The owner of the shop told us he could be a bit older, since preeders some times wait more than the allotted ten days to make sure the hatchlingd survive.

Puck is fully weaned, though has no trouble with seeds orfruit aand doesn't beg for food.

Sorry for any typos, he'sperched on my other hand demolishing a piece of paper.

Haha no worries! That's very strange. My budgies don't go to new homes until they're at least 8 weeks so obviously the larger species I breed take even longer! How odd that he's weaned already... perhaps he was force weaned to a schedule? Unusual, that's for sure! Considering he is eating fine and not begging at all. Isn't it funny how the best toys are usually not the ones you buy

Just curious mainly, don't most forced weaned chicks have issues later on? Purely for my own curiosity, not against anyone. Puck seems pretty well adjusted overall without vices. Could he have been a particularly young weaner? In the same vein, I regret getting Reptar before weaning, but without any pressure, he was almost fully weaned by 7 weeks. He started rejected most feedings within that week, way way way earlier than any recommended feeding schedule I found for GCCs. Freaked me out honestly, I was expecting it to last a lot longer. Is that something that happens in birds on occasion? ( I apologize for the slightly off topic branch)
