Hello From Texas

Howdy!

My name is Mike. I'm the owner of a 8 month old Sun Conure and now the new owner of a Red Fronted Macaw.

I'm seeking some advise on the RFM. She was given to me by a customer of mine. He gave me the cage, food, bird, pretty much everything. He had this bird out in the garage mostly. He use to have her inside, but since his wife's disability, the birds screeches would give his wife immediate headaches.

This bird is 1 1/2 yrs old. She has pulled out most of her tail feathers. In fact, she only has one tail feather left. She looks rough. She has been at our house for about 1 day now. She just started eating and playing with her toys finally.

I got her to get on my arm earlier today, but it was a challenge. What should I be doing to make her feel more at home?

Thank you!

Hello fellow Texan! I have three Red Fronted Macaws, 2 Greencheek Conures, 1 Black Headed Caique, and 1 Cockatiel. Where are you located at, I'm near Beaumont, TX? I hope your RFM will settle down soon. I know she is happy to be in a home now and not out in the garage, as they love human contact, plus the Texas heat it just to much for them.

Hello Conure!

I'm in Gatesville, Tx. Believe it or not, she stepped up on my arm about 30 mins ago. In fact, she let me scratch her behind her head. Looks like shes going to fit right in.

Thinking I should take her to the vet for a check up

Thank you for taking her in. A vet check would be a good idea as she has been at least somewhat neglected. Her plucking could be a real issue but hopefully now that she's got the company and attention that these birds need she will settle down.

Vet check is in order but I feel RFM are prone to plucking. We have three RFM, 2 pluck, 1 severe (only feathers on head, lower wing, and tail feathers), and the other just green feathers on belly are plucked. The remaining RFM is in good feather condition. My birds are on a good diet, have plenty of toys, out of cage all day, and full flighted.
