I'm new to this website and am looking forward to getting a bird. I've never had one before but I've done tons of research on all types and although I want a Cockatiel and my parents said yes, they'd rather me get a smaller bird. I want one that likes to cuddle and from the research I've done, Budgies don't all that much. I was checking out Parrotlets and although they don't seem like huge issues, they kind of have some behavioral problems. I may just end up getting a Cockatiel but I wanted to check. Any advice?

If you want a friendly cuddly bird I recommend a cockatiel or if you can handle a nippy stage I highly recommend a green cheek conure.. I have a parrotlet a green cheek 3 cockatiels and 5 budgies.. My green cheek is my friendliest most hands on cuddle bug bird. She loves being handled and hugged... Sometimes she nips but not very often however gcc are known for being nippy, however they are easily trained and corrected. They quickly learn it is unacceptable behavior. Mine is much quieter than the cockatiels and smaller.

Hello dellaluna, welcome to the forum.

Cockatiels make great pet birds, so do budgies. I was surprised at your comment thinking budgies aren't cuddly they can be amazing playful hands on birds to own.

Depending where you purchase your bird is the key, if you purchase your bird (tiel or budgie) at a typical pet store good chances are you are going to get a bird that is not hand tame. This means you have to do the work to make the bird hand tame.... not so easy!

Most pet store birds will not have had the daily human contact it needs to be an easy going happy bird easily willing to step up and become your forever friend once you bring it home.

I suggest you do some serious shopping around for breeders, you will pay a little more for a bird at a breeders but you will also be paying for a hand tame bird that will come home and be ready to play and hang out with you.

Don't rule out pet budgies, they can talk and play and love to be hands on with an owner who puts in the time, but like I said a breeder that hand tames their chicks before they sell them is what you need to assure you will be happy with your new fid.

Good luck.

Thank you both. I went to go check out some Cockatiels and Budgies and I ended up playing with the Green Cheek Conure they had for a while. The lady who helped me owns a few and said they were great and I fell in love with the one they had. My mom also showed obvious favor of it over the Cockatiel. Although it is a lot more price wise I'm definitely gravitating toward that now, it was so sweet and cuddly and had a great personality plus it didn't bite hard at all (although I'm sure it could).

I think a cockatiel would be an ideal companion, conures are more big bird like though! It's entirely up to yourself
