Thumbs up I'm new

My name is Rosebud 51, I am getting a baby Ringneck in about 2 weeks, I'm so excited. I want to make sure that I do the right things as soon as he gets home. Starting off on the right phone. I don't want to do anything to scare him at first.

I won't be getting my ringneck (Sammy) for a couple more weeks, can't wait. My main concern is the first day he's home, what should we do and not do. I don't want to overwhelm him, so do I just put him in his cage with food and let him be, or side next to him.

When you bring Sammy home place him in his cage and have some music or the tv playing in the background. Too much quiet can spook and make a bird more nervous, remember he's coming from a breeders so he's use to other bird noises and activity around him.

Sit by the cage and talk to him or read a book out loud to him so he gets use to your voice. Don't move fast when you approach him or the cage as sudden movement of his new human can make him scared.

When you talk to him and look at him blink your eyes and look away from time to time. Birds associate a person staring at them as if they are prey and being stalked. Predators stare at birds before they attack so blink a lot!

Move your hands slowly when you move things in his cage when changing food or water, talk to him constantly and encourage any socializing he does with you with a happy high excited voice.

Birds love to hear they are being good when their human talks happy and excitedly to them. So make him know he's being a good boy and you will have him eating out of your hands in no time.

Unless he is very clingy for at least the first day I would just leave him be. If he's desperate to be out with you then by all means give him the attention he wants but if not leave him for a while. A few days if he is particularly nervous. You'll want to make sure that he knows where his food and water is, playing with toys etc. before hand. This way he will learn to feel comfortable in his cage and also become aware of his surroundings
