Thank you all very much!
I have a "flock" of 3, two sisters Tippy & Tyler, who are going to be 8 next month, and a young male, about a year old (was told he was 2 but he doesn't act it), we call Baby.
They are, contrary to most of the research I've read/studied, extremely intelligent, compared to the regular budgies I had as a kid. My 2 gals don't "talk" but have an amazing talent for mimicry and will even imitate phone rings, the refrigerator or a buzzing overhead light. They do not deign to play with most bird toys, but do make exceptions. They love their morning and evening flights out of their large aviary cage. And they enjoy watching tv with me from the top of their cage. They get upset at shows where a child is endangered; don't like crashes, etc. They will empathize with a crying heroine and do these query chirps. I have to reassure them everything will be all right. They love jazz and Big Band music.
They understand spoken phrases/instructions. I am glad to read of how almost everyone who encounters one of these special birds adores it. Our main disagreement is their habit of flying to the floor and zipping around. We've compromised--they explore fearlessly until I stand up and then they fly back to their cage or other off-the floor-interests.
Tippy & Tyler are able to open the cage door and are apparently territorial. I have a maintenance guy who refuses to enter the apt unless I am there after a misunderstanding he had with the girls when I first moved in. He is a hefty, 6 ft tall guy!
Here are pics of the sisters. Tippy is on the cage side, Tyler is perched. Just got Baby last month, so no pics yet.
Thank you for all the kind remarks and letting me brag about the fluffy pink joys in my life!.
