Hello I'm new and need advcie quick please

Hello everyone,

I have been keen to purchase a bird for a while problem is I'm not sure what bird to go for an Amazon or an African Grey????????

Let me tell you abit about myself well I work PT hubby FT, I have 2 children a G,B. Both are very excited but would like a freindly, talking parrot. We are in and out of the house and home in the evenings.

I have spoke to a pet shop and she actually buys froma breeder, so it's really my choice what I go for now, any opinions please.

Much appreciated

It depends on what you're looking for in a bird really. Amazons, are you prepared for some of the scariest hormonal changes out of all the parrot species? Are you willing to put up with it every single Spring? Can you handle their scream? Greys, can you handle the dust? They're not always the most cuddliest of birds either, same goes for Amazons. What species of Amazon did you want too? And have you decided whether you'd like a Congo or Timneh African Grey?

Welcome by the way!

Like Daisy said it's all about what you're looking for in a bird. Both are beautiful and intelligent, but each has it's pros and cons

I personally would never have a 'zon... I could never handle the mood changes... Geeze I have the mini version of a 'zon.. Aka a parrotlet and get enough bites and mood swings from him!

We have had our orange wing zon 4months now and most of the time you hardly notice she is there. She has her occassional noisy patch but she is very placid for a zon. She is a one person bird, you notice a totally different side of her with my hubby who she adores but she is aloof with us. She is 10yrs+ and is only just starting to play since we got her a new cage, no idea how long she'd been in the old one. She's the definition of perch potato!

Have you ever had a pet bird before? If so then id say your a little more experianced. Otherwise id go for a bird that is a bit smaller. Some large birds such as cockatoo's and African Greys can be more one person birds. I'd say you want a nice little family bird. Cockatiels can be lovely birds and are not as expensive or hard to look after and have the ability to talk. They are also cheaper in price and it is easier to find a good breeder which is why i am recommending them for you. P.s I have also heard African Greys need quite a bit of attention and are not good pets if you dont have lots of time to spend with them.

Hope I helped

My mini 'zon ( aka parrotlet ) nipped me on the neck today and left a big red welt.... No more shoulder time for him.... The little poop for brains!
