Hello from Chicago!

Hey- I'm Nikole. I am currently owned by a cinnimon pied/pearled male cockatiel, and a beautiful normal pied female (who is carrying an egg!). I am also mommy to a two year old son, a Doberman (that's the biggest lap dog you'll met), and a man-child husband who couldn't treat me better.
I'm 23 and my husband is going to be 36 this year, and we recently lost a baby in early pregnancy. I have some experience with large birds and was leaning towards an African Grey or a Galah Cockatoo.

Of course I did some CL searching, and have been corresponding back and forth with this guy ( http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/for/3843017229.html ) He said that he is very tame for his wife, whom he chose to be his primary caregiver (that will be me, my husband works 6 /12's and is only home Sundays. My son is in daycare all day long during the week so I definitely have the time. I have very little experience with Macaws, but from reading these e-mails he sounds like he may be a good starter one.

Do any of you have Harequin Macaws? What do you like/dislike about them?
Or should I stick with my original medium sized parrots (the grey and Galah)?

ETA: BTW: The Galah and Grey would come from a VERY well known breeder, Brian from Microbrood Aviary in Oak Park IL. He also has ALL sorts of Macaws. Would I be better off getting a baby, or "rescuing" this guy in need of a good home?

I know I went off topic on my intro, but I figured it was pertinent information :smiles:

Thanks ya'll!
Nikole

Welcome to the forum! We would love to see some photos of your cockatiels

As for the choice of bird, it is totally up to you. If you want to take him on and are prepared for a life owning a macaw then do it. However, if you do not get one of your original choice birds you may regret that. You could end up having a good OR bad relationship with any of the birds you choose regardless of whether or not they're hand raised babies or a rehome. I like all three species, however I do not own any whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be the best decision for you. One concern would be that huge beak with your child. A galah and grey could easily do a lot of damage but a macaw is a whole different level
