Any Advice?????
When I got home today, I took the dog out for a walk and I let Rio come along for the ride. Done this the last 2 days. Was a bit of a nightmare getting the harness on him but once it was on, he seemed fine. Ive tried to introduce it to him slowly like the instructions say but he has never been keen on it at all. The breeder I got him from had it on him all the time and he was fine with it, but for some strange reason, he doesnt like me coming near him with it in my hand!!

Its very fiddly to get on and off but I think he likes being out with me and Snoop for the walk and while on the move, he seems to forget the harness is even there!! Its something Im gonna have to do with them as often as possible and in different areas too, just to let him get used to the harness and being outside.

I have been a little worried about Rio lately as he seems to be chewing a lot of his feathers. Not plucking them out or anything, just chewing at them. All under his wings and his legs are a mess but his chest, wings and tail are all fine and in great shape. This was something that he started doing when we left him at that garden centre back in October while Kaye and I went on our honeymoon. Prior to this, he was feather perfect!

The last couple of days, if hes in his cage, he just seems to sit on one perch and only move for his breakfast or his evening meal. If I take him outside to his outdoor cage, he just sits on one perch and doesnt really do much. If I let him out of his cage into our sitting room, he either sits on top of his cage doing nothing or sits on his Java perch doing nothing or at the very most, he will preen! I should say, that hes only ever in his cage in the morning when im at work but when I get home and get settled, he is out till tea time, then out again till around 8pm, sometimes later.

This is why I have made more of an effort to take him with me when I take Snoop out for his afternoon walk. I guess im hoping that the new sites and sounds that he is seeing, will maybe perk him up a bit. But im also worried that the harness might be making him un-easy!

He has loads of toys that get changed around every few weeks, he has a good, varied diet and he gets loads of time out of his cage. He gets plenty of showers and I try to do target and trick training with him as often as I can but maybe not as often as I should!!! So im kinda out of ideas!

Can anyone suggest anything to help us out?!?!?!

He was chewing them before hand wasn't he? Cause I remember you you posting pics of his legs :( I personally don't think it's the harness and you should keep up the work with that, it sounds like he has a lot of fun. He also has everything he could possibly want really. How old is he? Could he be hormonal and a bit fustrated because he can't mate?

He just turned 2, 2 weeks ago! Yes I posted the pictures when I first came back from my honeymoon. That was the first sign of any feather damage!

Would he be hitting a hormonal stage at that age then do you think? (I'm not sure when they do bought I thought they hit it at about 2-3 years old)

I apologize, but I don't remember what kind of bird Rio is. If he's not playing and not as active as he was, he could be ill. You may want to take him to your avian vet for a check up.

You may have read my thread about Charley (Hahns Macaw). He stopped playing and talking, but was still eating just fine. He also slept more. He had some kind of bacterial infection and has been on antibiotics for two weeks. He's doing much better now. Goes back to the vet tomorrow for a re-check.

You know your bird -- if he isn't acting right, the vet should check him out.

JoAnne, he's a blue and gold macaw :)

Rossco 03-22-2012 02:13 PM

He goes through stages with the playing but I might just take him to the vet and see how he is getting on. He has just gone through quite a large molt so might even just be that but I think he is still a little young for the hormones at 2.

Let us know what happens at the vet -- hope he's okay -- maybe I'm just a worrier, but after what happened with Charley, it doesn't hurt to have him checked out, just to be sure.

Well I had Rio to the vets today and they reckon he's just out of sorts and not ill. They think he might be like this due to us having new windows fitted 2 weeks ago, workers in and around the house, a new car in our drive and Kaye being heavily pregnant!

Too many new things in such a short space of time! Vet said he looked very healthy other than the chewed feathers. He also said that things might get even worse with the new arrival when he comes!!!! Oh great. Lol. At least he is not ill though, so not all bad.

i am glad he is not sick. just give him some time to adjust to all the new and keep reassuring him everything is ok. i am sure he will come around and start acting himself with time.

I'm so glad you took him to the vet and that he's okay! One less thing to worry about! They are SO sensitive to what's going on around them!

Keep us posted on how's he's doing!

Going back to the vet tonight as Rio doesnt seem to be eating very much and he is still very quiet and sleepy.

catalinadee 03-26-2012 11:04 AM

I hope he is okay!

katew 03-26-2012 03:26 PM

How's Rio???

Rossco 03-27-2012 09:19 AM

I ended up not making it to the vets and had to cancel due to my son being sick all over the kitchen floor!!! Great, another invalid in the house!!!

Rio has been a bit better today though. He is eating at least but only accepting treats from hand. Still no interest in toys. Very little talking, squawking or any noise really! He just always looks fed up and sleepy and a lot of preening been going on.

Rio's poo's have always been a mix and match but his diet is also varied so I can expect to see different colours, textures etc but the last few days, they have been runny white with solid green????

I have given him some apple cider vinegar in his water just incase he does have a bug of some sort but the vet was determined he did not look ill and figured it would be a waste to take blood samples and would only cause more un-needed stress.

Rossco 03-31-2012 11:35 AM

Been to see another vet at a different practice today and he said same as last vet but reckons there may well be an under lying issue so has given me some anti-biotics. He said if he isnt any better by Wednesday, he will refer me to a specialist!!!!

catalinadee 03-31-2012 11:40 AM

Oh no! I hope he recovers soon!

katew 04-01-2012 03:21 PM

oh! be better Rio and Rossco's son!
it sucks when your kids are ill!

Rossco 04-03-2012 06:35 AM

Rio seems to be back on track now. Hes eating waaaay more, he is playing with his toys and is more active in and out of his cage. Still a tad sleepy and quiet but he is definitley showing signs of improvement. Fingers crossed that he makes a full recovery.

I will be taking him to an avian vet (Alistair Lawrie) in Falkirk next week on my day off just to be sure, so will keep you all posted.
