Amazons

As many of you may already know our flock is blessed with a red lored (yellow cheek) amazon.
Maggie is approx 25 years old and wild caught. He has worked very hard to learn to trust us and come such a long way.
He is pinioned and a bit tempermental but ultimately a sweet and lovable bird!
I am curious to know how many other people are owned by amazons and which species? Post pictures if you can and maybe tell us a little about your amazon.

Oh how I wish..

Maggie is stunning.. I really wish I could own an Amazon, it's just having the money!
Maggie! :lovehearts:
I missed seeing her.... his beautiful face :)
I'm curious as to who has more amazons as well. Such beautiful birds.
Meggie, What a cute bird!! :lovehearts:
I don't own an Amazon but I've been working with them in the pet shops for years now. I adore the Mealy Amazons and the Lilac Crowns :lovehearts: I love how grumpy they are!
What a beautiful bird. Thanks for sharing!
A wild caught? I didn't know that was still happening. I'm behind on current info on this sorry! He is awesome! How long have you had Maggie?

They aren't anymore it was banned in 1995, pinioning thankfullly is illegal now as well! If I could give one gift to Maggie it would be his flight! In the wild amazons are known to be amzing acrobats in the air. They can fly backwards, sideways and upside down. That was stolen from him because somebody figured ir would make him tame!
It didn't work. He has been in pet stores, homes and now with us for a little over a year I believe. He is just like one of the kids now.

Wow, that's amazing that he was wild caught! That's really interesting, but really sad at the same time. :( Maggie is adorable, I love her singing video!

I don't have any personal experience with Amazons, but my mom once had an Orangewing Amazon. :) She got him for free from a friend. The Amazon's name was Scratches, and she was apparently her baby, 'til I came along. I remember being so scared of that bird as a child. She had a weird grudge against my dad, though. He made her put her footprint on a card for mom, and she just went ballistic on him ever since. Unfortunately she died of a cyst in her throat before I could really get to know her. :(
My first large parrot was a lilac crown. Erin was wild caught and I adopted her from people who had for thirty years and were tired of her. She was a great talker. She ended up hating me but loved my sister.

My son and his girlfriend moved in with me and their stupid dog jumped at the cage one day scaring her so bad she fell off the perch and broke her neck.
Wow what a beautiful creature.

I would love to have one someday!
Oh, Maggie is a doll! Poor thing - you can tell he was wild caught and had a rough life. Have you taken him anywhere to work back his scissor beak?

We had an umbrella cockatoo for many years who was wild caught and physically abused. She was the sweetest bird I've ever worked at, but it was because she had been beaten.. No matter WHAT you did she wouldn't bite. It was very bittersweet.

The one vet we seen about the scissor beak wanted to put him under for it, so I learned how to trim it myself. It is better now but still scissored. It doesn't affect his ability to eat though and now that he will chew it is controlled better.
We are really excited with the progress he has made. Though he will not hesitate to bite, lol. Mind you he is very gentle with our children, but has bitten my husbnd many times :)
:giggle:
I don't have an amazon, but I want one!

Come to think of it I want every parrot, but I've always had a soft spot for amazons.

They are such personalities and very good talkers.

It's just their voices which may be their downfall....
Awwww what a cute face Maggie has :lovehearts:. It's disgusting that these horrible mutilations ever went on to begin with. :soapbox: Does Maggie cope ok eating with the scissor beak, or do you have to make adjustments to his diet?

I love the sound of an amazon voice!:lovehearts:The red lored aren't as big of talkers as the DYHs, they mumble more than anything, Maggie likes to quack and whistle. He does have a small vocabulary though. (I love you, thank you, am I a good girl?, what do I do? hello, ect...)
The thing I love most about amazons is that they are moderatly cuddly, independant and playful and bond very strongly but still tolerate the rest of the family pretty well!

Yes I love the sound of their talking voice, and they are stunning, and friendly, and big, in fact everything I like in a parrot.... and I would have one, but they are too noisy for me.
Even the quietest ones can give a noisy screech from what I've read, I wouldn't mind it, but my neighbours and family might.....
Price is another factor, and they're not commonly bred in NZ, so they'd be pretty expensive.

It's a shame though, they look so sweet.

(by they way, I love the noises Maggie makes, they are just too adorable!)
Aww my friend had a Red Lored. :) I had an Amazon but won't share. ;) LOL Nice bird btw.
