Appearing "dead"

My GCC, Kiwi, has never done this when I've been home, but on two separate occasions had my daughter (in tears) and my husband upset.....both called me at work!! Kiwi likes to go to the bottom of her cage and tear up the paper towels, and sometimes just hides....this is what I see. My daughter called me hysterical one day because she thought Kiwi was under her towels dead....my husband went through the same situation yesterday. They both claimed that they don't know where she is.......call her name, bang on the bars, shake the cage a little, pull the paper towels, open the door......nothing.......she appears "dead"!! She then rouses and is perfectly fine. It, according to my daughter who has now experienced this a few times and stopped freaking out, seems that she is in an extremely deep sleep!!??!! What is this behavior....has anyone had this happen??

Huh... that's really strange... I would contact your local avian vet and ask for some advice over the phone, and maybe make an appointment... It could be nothing, or it could be a neurological issue, where she falls into too deep a sleep and won't wake up easily?

I know people do that... namely my Dad :giggle: He goes through a phase most nights where NOTHING will wake him up for an hour or two, other than pain... don't ask how we know that one
She never acts like this when I'm here......I know she likes to get under things and play. Otherwise, everything about her is perfectly normal. She scared the "you know what" out of my husband when she "popped" up because he feared the worst!!
I have a feeling that this won't turn out to be anything bad, since our conure occasionally sleeps on her back at the bottom of the cage -- still, here's a few prayers, crossed fingers, etc.

(Reminds me of the dumb dog I had as a kid -- my dad took me aside to give me the sad speech about how he had died from the cold in a snowstorm -- but then we realized the motionless brown lump in the yard was not the dog but was actually the nice comfy blanket that the dog had tossed out of his freezing cold doghouse to make more room for himself!!!)
My Conure sometimes lays on her back to play, and I've seen her on her back in her sleeping tent, snoozing a bit, but she wakes up immediately when I walk near her cage, so not sure what you've got going on there. Hope all is well!
