When I say cleaning I mean like the floor under the cage that they poop all over and the walls around the cage that food and who knows what else gets slung onto... just wondering what to use to clean these areas... I worry even using a small amount of diluted household clearer.... what is safe to use, I don't want any fumes hurting my birds... Thanks

I use white vinegar and hot water I have tile and hard wood floors and it's safe for both, disinfects, and also helps remove odors, once the vinegar stink goes away

I use hot water and vinegar. Then once a month I use greenworks products. It has no ammonia, bleach and other harmful chemicals. I also use vinegar on my on my hardwood floors. I have to throw out all my other cleaners, as I never use them. Just feel bad throwing out so much cleaner. I should offer them for free on kijiji

How do you dilute the vinegar?

I've seen on the Linnie Forum about using grapefruit seed extract? or maybe it is grape seed extract? :shrug: I need to go back and read that stuff, but I'm so behind on that forum I get nervous just opening up the thing and seeing the three thousand or more new posts I haven't read! Anyway, do they use that stuff for cleaning the house or just the bird's stuff?

Oh, and does it have to be white vinegar? I think white vinegar is malt vinegar. For my own health using a vinegar not made from gluten grains would be best, I try to avoid anything that possibly could cause a problem if there is another alternative.

Sorry, I know these questions have nothing to do with bird health specifically, because birds don't have trouble with this.

I use Apple Cider Vinegar and hot water. I use it on the cage itself and for a quick toy cleaner. Also areas around the cages. Doesn't smell too bad and doesn't have to be rinsed off. I've been using it for over 2 years without my birds having any problems.

I use white vinegar and apple cider vinegar - depends on whats handy As for diluting it, there's no real specific measurement I use, I just fill my gallon bucket and use a splash :shrug: Sorry I can't be of much help there! The good thing is there's no such thing as too much, so you can't over do it

I don't think the smell of vinegar is dangerous to either us or our parrots. It's definitely not the same as bleach or other cleaners since it's not made of chemicals. I use a vinegar/water mixture for cleaning my room (where Gizmo's cage is) though we use greenworks in the rest of the house. I use organic cleaning products, but the best tool in my poop-fighting arsenal is - I kid you not - a paint scraper! Contrary to what you might think, it works great for removing food and poop - even Lorikeet poop - from the walls, my laminate floors in the bird room, my hardwood upstairs, cages, grates... the list goes on! All without damage to the actual surface, even my hardwood! I would never try to clean without it again.
