What is clicker training?
Can it be used for all birds?
Hi there,

Clicker training is a method of training where you use a clicker (noise maker) to "mark" the behavior you like so that you can have a moment to deliver the reinforcer (treat). Every time you click you must treat. So, the click tells the animal that what he did when he heard the click was what you liked and that is what you are treating for.

Clicker training is used with many different species. I have done it with dogs, my birds and with exotics at the zoo.

You might want to check out www.clickertraining.com and their is a yahoo group called Bird Click.

Here is a video of my cockatiel opening her wings on cue. I used clicker training to train the behavior.

Here is my budgie, Oliver, targeting.

Clicker training is a wonderful method for training birds. I'm currently working on clicker training my Severe but I'm waiting to find his favorite treat before I start  Vicki summed it up pretty well!

On an off note, Clicker Training is a wonderful way to train any animal. We clicker train our dogs and my sister clicker trained her rats to high-five and do tricks too!

I would love to clicker train a rat:) I have had several pet rats but not for a few years. It is an animal that I think would be fascinating and very fun to train. they are on my list (along with fancy mice) of animals I want to clicker train:)

It was shockingly easy, as long as we kept it simple. One is far more food motivated than the other and she picked up on high-five on 3 tries! The other took a bit longer but still figured it out!
