Herbs anyone?

Do any of you offer herbs to your birds.? My guys have a dish of herbs in their cages at all times, I change them out every 2 weeks, as recommended. They do munch about in there, I guess they take what they want as needed.

Well I keep a basil or other plant in the cage sometimes.
They kinda love it.

Note Vegemite is bypassing the almighty MILLET for basil. :p

I have not tried this but after reading about all the advantages in it I am going to order some. Birds in the wild would self medicate and I think that would be healthy for them, they would know what they need in this case more than we would. Thanks for the link.

I would love to hear more about this. Do you mean like dried herbs? I was guessing they are dry if they can be in there for two weeks. Unless they are plants, which wouldn't be in a dish:) I am going to go look at the site, but please tell me more about offering herbs:)

Vicki
I have also done some reading and think this is an awesome idea , im gonna give it a go also! Let me know what kind of results if any, you guys are getting!
Vicki, this is the site I order my herbs from, they're a little bit pricey, but they do last a long time. You will find all the info you need here. :)

I actually found a supermarket that sells a few herbs potted in the organic produce section. Look around and get that if you can. Couldn't be easier. I leave the pot in the cage for a while. I like them potted because they stay alive and all that, so it's always fresh. You can even report them and cultivate as you will. Mine get droopy because they're not always in the window, but a little water and sunlight brings them right back.

What a good idea. Do the birds ever get into the dirt?
Hi Sue, I've read a lot about the herb salad. I'm going to order some when I place a food order tomorrow. I like the idea of them being able to self medicate like they can/do in the wild. :)
I ordered the bird salad and I think is smells great, like turkey stuffing. The birds... well I'm not sure they care. They haven't shown much interest unless I put treat seeds with it
Cess, maybe they will when/if they need it? I think it's probably like anything else new, scary until they know it won't "get um". :p

Yes Deb, thats the key here, just like in the wild, they have an innate sense and will eat the herbs as needed. If the herbs are always available to them they will eat them when nature dictates. :) Having said that, my GCC eats his and gets into the other birds dishes whenever he can, but then he's a little hog, and will eat anything he can find. :giggle:

Nah, I am usually right near them when it's inside the cage and it's a small pot they wouldn't have very good footing on, so they don't even think to try. When it's not in the cage completely, I'll put the pot alonside the cage and kind of bend a few stems inward. If you can keep the pot so that the cage is between it and the source of sunlight, the plant turns into it on its own, too.

It's probably the most convenient way to cultivate your own organic herbs. :yesnod:
Oh that looks interesting.
I would get it, but shipping prices are pricey.
I get organic wheat grass from the grocery store and put the whole plant in. The cockatiel and Bourke loves to eat it up. It lasts about 4-6 days.
I throw it out and get another. All my birds love wheat grass. I have not tried other plants yet but will look for basil! Thanks for the pic and idea.
I don't, but I should. I'll have to get some this week.
I was wondering what herbs were safe for birds, or beneficial. I picked up one of those Chia Herb gardens today since they are on clearance after Christmas, and wondered if it would be good for them. Anyone tried those?

I give mine the herb salad too. I sprinkle some on their rice or whatever they have on their salad plate. It smells like turkey dressing and they like it.
You might notice in an earlier post I said Millie didn't like it. Niblet did and if likes something so does she. LOL
