The good news is that August, my white capped pionus, is supposed to like veggies and fruit. The down side is that I think I've created a seed junkie. I offer two bowls - one for veggies and one for seed/pellets and August has over the weeks started ignoring his veggies for the seed bowl.

The good news is that he is eating the pellets in his seed mix. I feed Tropican lifetime formula to my cockatiels and the seed mix comes with pellets.

Pi owners: Any advice on what i could do do encourage a return fruits and veggies? And what pellets, if any, do you feed your fids? I feed Tropican to my cockatiels because it's the easiest stuff to find.

I'd remove the seed dish for a few hours when you are offering fresh fruits and veg. Hang or peg the fresh food in between the bars of the cage close to where the bird likes to sit the most. Put the fresh foods on a skewer like shish ka bobs you can even cut the fresh food differently into long thin strips instead of chunks and sprinkle a tiny amount of millet on the fresh veg to entice the bird to get to the millet and eat the veg or fruits as well.

I don't like pellets in my birds seed mix I'd rather offer it separate in another treat cup for them. If you offer the pellets separately then you know exactly how much your bird is consuming by looking at the treat dish you serve them in.

I have a bad feeling about pellets mixed in bird seed I suspect the pellets are old and just added to make us consumers think we are giving our birds the best seed mix because there are pellets in the bag.

Its said you can freeze a package of pellets after its been opened to keep them "fresh."

But we don't usually freeze our bird seed after we open it to keep it fresh so the pellets in the bag of seed are not staying very fresh while they sit in the bag of seed for however long it takes your bird to eat that entire package of seed mix.

I agree that the best option is to remove the seed cup for a while. Feed veggies in the morning, and later remove the fresh and offer the dry. Remove the dry overnight, so he is hungry in the morning. Also I agree with offering the veggies in new ways. My BHP likes to eat food she can hold in her foot.

Also, I agree that it's best to feed the pellets separate from the seed. Pionus are particularly prone to fatty liver, obesity, and being perch potatoes. I would offer seeds only as training treats.
