we have our quaker and our grey in our living room, so they are totally part of our daily lives. However, everytime we walk up stairs (its a loft, so it is open and they can easliy hear us) they start freaking out screaming. The grey will give up after just a few 'honks', but our quaker will NOT stop untill she sees us downstairs again. I don't get it. We've tried everything under the sun, so my question is, why do they do this?

I have two theories of what it may be, the first is an attention thing.

Maybe they don't like you leaving the room, because they want your full attention on them.

Even if they know that you are coming back, or that it's not scary being left in the room, they probably want you to come and play with them.

Maybe Marnie is a bit more content to play on her own than Chloe, and thats why she stops. But if your quaker's a bit of an attention seeker, it's quite normal for her to not stop calling for you until you get back.

Theory number 2: I also think it could just be a contact call. They know you are leaving the room, and they might not mind, but they want to make sure you are safe, so they frequently call to make sure you are okay.

In the wild, parrots are almost always with their flock, and are always keeping contact with each other. They tell each other if there's a predator, or if they see food, or just to keep themselves feeling safe amongst the constant chatter of the group.

Since you are their flock, they want to keep contact with you.

It's a very normal thing with parrots that are bonded to their owners.
My conure, Ziggy, never stops calling out to me if I ever leave the room, even when she's in her cage. Sometimes she will just call every couple of minutes, as if to say, "are you still here?"

It could be a bit tricky to stop it, but they may stop if you call back to them to reassure them, with maybe a whistle or their names.

Hope this helps!

cool...thank you so much for your reply.

Chloe is 100% bonded to me. She watches me where ever i go and whatever i do. The only time she stops screaming is at night when she gets covered (thank god for that!)

Marnie...on the other hand...is starting to bond with me already. We've only had her since sept. but shes a grey, so shes sharp as a tack.

I definitly dont allow any whistling in the house, becuz i dont want our grey being just a whistler...shes just about to start talking (within another month or so) so shes listening to every little sound we make. She already picked up our cell phone rings...lol...and is starting to "mumble" in the famous african grey tone.

I am going to try picking a certain word or phrase and everytime I leave the room i'll just repeat it so maybe they'll know im close by and coming back.

On a side note...our african grey likes to hang upside down from your hand and pick up peanuts from the bottom of the drawer...lol...its her latest "trick". All i gottta say is "peanut?" and she steps into position on my hand, and just falls backwards, hanging upside down, waiting for me to lower her down to grab her treat...LOL....i'll have to get a video of it...its so funny!!!

It's great that you found the info helpful.

I'm sure using a word would be just as good as whistling

LOL, yes you have to post a video of that trick! It sound really cute!

I hope it works!
