Linnies and button quail

Hi, just wondering if i could put my button quail with my linnie, i just got my linnie hes 8 weeks old, im just concerned if i did this that the linnie would take on the behaviour of the button quail and then i wont be able to hand tam the linnie

What kind of caging are you using for the button quail now? I wouldn't think that one would be happy in a traditional bird cage, what with their tendency to jump high when startled.

If your linnie is in a large, walk-in aviary, I don't see the harm... although be mindful that linnie beaks could cause some damage to a tiny button quail.

Hmm, it could go either way. Linnies do spend more time on the ground than other species, and having a ground-dwelling friend is likely to encourage that. However, they are different enough that it might not be a problem. Have you posted on the linnie forum? You could ask there as well, perhaps someone there may know!

I wouldn't say a linnie would especially bond with a quail, being of two very different species.

But I would say it is best to house them separately, because the birds probably will want their own space and to avoid hygiene issues (the linnie pooping on the quail ect.)

Button quails are more suited to aviary's, and I'm guessing if you want to tame the linnie they wont be in an aviary.

I doubt they would fight, but if thats a concern then put their cages together and slowly let them meet each other.

It really should't affect your bonding in any way- they are two very different species.

but i could be wrong, so this is just my opinion. :)

ok thanks for the advice, well my cage is inside, its 4ft long 2ft wide by 3ft tall

oh and also, my linnie since i got him home all he does is hide under the newspaper that on the bottom of the cage, comes out to eat and drink though

:giggle: sounds like he's nervous and hiding! Linnies do love to hide under things. Give him time, once he's more confident, he'll come out more!

thats completely normal for baby parrots to do that. linnies and other parrots like conures like to hide under things- it makes them feel secure.

don't worry, she wont be nervous for long, soon she'll be settled.

Chris try spending some time singing, whistling or just talking quietly to the linnie. I bet in no time he will come out to see what's going on. They can be very shy and it only takes time and patience to win them over. Well worth it for sure. :biggrin5:
