I went to Omaha last weekend to take pics at my aunts daughters wedding. When i stopped at my uncles house he had a beautiful antique brass bird cage and stand. It is about 100 years old. It was my aunts grandparents. She called me to tell me she wanted me to have it. She didn't know anyone who was into birds and she knew i was and said it would make her happy to give it to me. It is a gorgeous small bird cage suitable for a finch or canary. They are on e bay for quite alot of money and i told her that she maybe would want to look into that but she wants me to have it. I am sooooo excited. She said she wants me to put a bird in it. I don't know if brass is ok or not. I think i would like to get a canary or a one of those beautiful lady gouldlan (sorry spelling is wrong)finches. but only if it is would be safe for them Do any of you know?:thumbsup:

Hmmmm Im not sure Ive never heard of it being a problem, you should post a picture of it, but I would keep it as more of a play gym as finches and canaries usually like large flight cages that go horizontal as opposed to vertical, still really awesome though id love to have an antique cage even just for decour. It was sweet that she wanted you to have it.

I have a few brass cages and they're fine ^^

I used to breed gouldians, they're stunning, get a male though, more vivid :D

Thank you, kind of thinking about a canary that sings. Glad to hear it's not a problem to use brass.

only males sing if I am correct? So you'll have to 100% make sure it's a male haha!

Yes, only male canaries sing, females just peep and chirp a bit. They look almost identical so a good rule of thumb when buying a canary from a pet shop is to sit back a bit and wait till you hear one sing so you know 100% it's male  Many shops just throw them all together or mislabel them so better safe than sorry if you want a singer. If you're not too fussed about singing then just go for the pretty one lol. Also, I think when housing canaries, they need to be all the same sex if you're going to have more than one. Males and females will fight when they're not breeding and males will get very territorial with one another if there is a female about

Thanks for your advice it all sounds good. I picked up my cage last night and the stand is more ornate than the cage. So i am cleaning it with brasso and will have to really scrub it after that to get that off. I am thinking it may be nice to put a battery operated candle in it with some ivy trailing out the bars. Still thinking. Will post pics when i get it all cleaned up.
