My Flock

I wanted to introduce my little flock to you. Our flock is made up of two cockatiels and four budgies. The cockatiels are afraid of the budgies, and can't work out what these little creatures are, or why they sometimes follow them around, but the budgies are mostly friendly towards them, especially Misfit.

Lofty and Kami are our 'tiels. Kami is short for Kamikaze, since on her first flight (at the breeders) she flew out of the breeders hand and crash landed on a table, getting herself tangled in fly paper. They're about a year and three months old now, and we've had them for a year. They're from different clutches and a week apart in age, but they were handraised together and have been together their whole lives, although they haven't bonded to each other. Kami is a real sweetie. She loves scritches, and likes to sit on shoulders, especially my bf's, or sit on our knees or the desk and doze and keep an eye on us. Lofty is a proper cuddlebug, lol. She loves to be with people, and if she doesn't think she's had enough attention, she crawl under my chin and beg for scritches. They both like to "help" me make toys, and are always running of with the beads or blocks when I need them. They both love foraging, especially the foraging tray and foraging cups. You can see loads of the foraging toys I've made and more photos of the birds in my blog (the links in my sig).

Kami is the cinnamon pearl pied and Lofty is the whiteface cinnamon pied.

The budgies are all semi tame. They'll all step up and we can handle them to check their wings/nails, etc, but generally they're happy together and ignore us. Misfit is our oldest budgie. We've had her over three years, so she may be four years old now. She's the smallest of all our birds, and definitely the bravest. She'll occasionally come down and sit on the back of my chair, or on the computer monitor with the 'tiels. Gizmo we've had for over two years now, so she must be around 3. She tends to be least outgoing and ignores us pretty much all the time. Widget and Akio we got around March this year, from a breeder. Widget is now between two and three years old (I need to check his band, lol). He's always singing, and is really sweet. He loves getting a spray bath once a week, although the other budgies all hate it and just bath in their dish. Akio is my special boy. He's the youngest of the budgies, hatched a year younger than Widget. Poor Akio can't fly because of a ligament injury to one of his wings. As a result he's incredibly tame, although again, he'd rather just play with the other budgies. Any time he falls on the floor, and he wants lifted back, he'll come running over to us, and hop onto a hand. Then he'll hold on to our fingers, and lean in the direction he wants us to take him in.

Misfit is the dominant pied sky blue greywing, Gizmo is the cobalt/violet, Widget is the grey and 'Kio is the normal green.

Wow, your flock is beautiful! Those are fabulous pics. Nice and clear. I really like the spool toy - where did you get that? I like the pics with the budgies sleeping on the parrot tower!
Lovely little guys.:) Cockateils appeal to me, and I'm tempted, but the dust I keep reading about is worrying me....

Thanks. :) I think it came free with the temp cage I had for them, but I really can't remember. It used to have a jingle bell in it, but I took it out, and wrapped a shredder through the bars, then put millet inside it, and the 'tiels love it. =)

Sharon, I have mild asthma, but I don't really find any problem with the dust from the 'tiels, the majority of the time. The first couple of weeks when they, plus all the budgies, started moulting at once, was the only time I've had problems. They're great birds, and full of character, and so easy going that they'll forgive practically anything. When we have to clip their nails, they'll make a fuss, then when we let go of them, they'll crawll up to our shoulders and preen us. :lovehearts: If you know anyone with a 'tiel or maybe found a breeder, you could meet a few and see if the dust bothers you. Plenty of baths, and air purifiers can also help to keep the dust down. =)
Thanks Mythara...I'm definitely tempted!:)
They are all beautiful birds. I love the pictures! Thanks for sharing.
Mythara, your birds are beautiful. Honestly, I couldn't decide which one was my favorite. And I too, love that spool toy. What a great idea. Oh and welcome.
What a beautiful flock :). Tiels are so laid back :giggle:, they just look at budgies as if they're saying "What the heck"?. My tiel thinks she's a princess and far too good to bother with my conures.:p
You have a beautiful flock.

I have two tiels and a cockatoo and the dust can be a problem if you don't keep up on it. I have to dust more in the area where their cages are.

What I found that helps is to spray them down on a daily basis.
WOW their all so cheeky! :lovehearts:

What a beautiful adorable flock. :lovehearts:
Thanks everyone. They got grounded yesterday, because the 'tiels were being grumpy, lol, but they got sprouts when I put them back in, so they didn't really mind.
Lofty is my fav! :swoon: But you have gorgoeus flock Mythara, no doubt about that! :biggrin5:
