Hello! I'm wondering about everybody's opinion on the usual dogs/cats vs. the somewhat unusual parrots.

Firstly, if you had to choose one to have and only one, which would you pick? Dog/cat or parrots? I honestly would choose parrots, and I think a good majority of you all can understand that, but I think a good majority of non parrot owners would not understand it at all. :giggle:

Also, what makes parrots BETTER than dogs and cats? I notice in my birds that they are full of surprises everyday! It seems to me that dogs and cats tend to do the same things over and over. Yes they are cute and I love them, but my birds will entertain me with new things all the time! I find also that parrots are more of a challenge to own and raise, but I actually really like that.

I have a lot more points that relate to this, but I would first like to see what opinions you fellow parrot forum visitors have?

To me, parrots are nothing like dogs and cats. Dogs and cats have been domesticated for centuries. Parrots are still not domesticated, although budgies and cockatiels are much further along in this process than other parrots. I have heard that canaries have actually been bred longer in captivity than any parrot species have.

A parrot person must be willing to co-exist with another species as opposed to dominate. Actually, a cat person is kind of in the same boat, too. I find that parrots must be given more choices than dogs and cats. I think you have to have more patience to live with a parrot, or develop it as you work out your relationship.

I find the risks to be greater with parrots. You can more easily mess up your relationship. For me, though, the rewards are greater, or just as great, anyway.

I agree with nanay on that one. I adore my dog to bits but at the same time my birds are just as important but in different ways. The dogs are extremely loyal and loving but so can the birds be. Hmmm I wouldn't really know,
I would say both are pretty much the same but have different pros and cons.

What makes parrots better though? Hmm. Well I think that the fact they can mimic is pretty cool, the fact they fly too ;) but I don't know. You get bad dogs and good birds but you can get good dogs and bad birds. Am I making sense 'cause I'm driving my self insane here XD I think you get what I mean though haha.

I wouldn't choose one over the other is all I'm trying to say

If I had to, I really think I would choose parrots, though.

There's just something about them I can't explain.
