Pine nuts

I know a lot of us give our birds pine nuts.

There was a very interesting article in the food section of the Baltimore Sun a couple of weeks ago about pine nuts. Apparently, stores have recently been importing an Asian variety because they are a lot cheaper than the European. The shape is different. The Asian looks more like a kernal of corn and the European is more pointy at both ends.
It was in the food section because apparently people have been complaininng that the Asian pine nuts leave a bitter after taste that lasts for days. One of the better restaurants in Baltimore that specializes in pine nut roll said the ONLY use the European.

The article said that the pine nuts that are sold at Costco are the Asian variety.
I wonder if our birds can taste the difference.

Here is a link to the whole article if anyone is interested.

Huh, very interesting. I had noticed the different shape, but hadn't really thought about it! I wonder if anyone's birds prefer the Asian ones since birds seem to like strong flavors - they might enjoy the bitter!
